Hey AMPers,
Congratulations to everyone that worked on the last issue! It turned out well and I, for one, have been getting a lot of positive feedback from people. The turnout was a little bit low as far as people coming through with their articles and showing up to help work on layout, so I hope next time we can do better in those areas. Although we are completely voluntary and don't have a staff per se, we do need your help in making the newspaper happen. I know I for one put in well over 30 hours between Friday night and Monday morning and that's just too much, I think. So I hope more of you will show up next time to work with us on producing the November issue, and for those people that did help out, it is much appreciated.
That said, although it's a little bit early to be worrying about the November issue, it's not to early to start planning. I hope everyone is coming up with some interesting article ideas, last issue was a bit too editor-heavy in terms of content. I haven't talked to anyone else yet, but how does next Sunday (the 14th) at 10 PM work for the next meeting time? We need to start brainstorming ideas and figuring out what the next issue is going to look like, and personally I have no problems getting started a little bit early this month. The earlier we get motivated and thinking about the next issue, the better it will be.
On another, related note, you may recall that we decided to have a "Caption Contest" in the last issue. The idea was that people could send us their ideas of funny captions to go with the illustration. Now, the newspaper has only been out a few days, but I anticipate a hearty lack of response on this challenge, even with our enticing free t-shirt offer. Therefore, since we are now a student organization, we can obtain a table in the Comet Cafe. I think both to get responses for the contest and to make ourselves more known on campus, we should set something up sometime on the week of the 16th-21st. I haven't checked with student union people yet, but I'm sure we could get something arranged.
I was thinking maybe a ballot-box type setup for the caption contest- people could fill out their caption suggestion with their name and email address and submit it to us. On the table we'd need some sort of flashy AMP... sign thingy. We could, hopefully, get more writers this way and ensure that our t-shirt won't go out to the one person that actually submits something.
Please let me know if you are interested in manning an AMP booth sometime in the coming weeks, and what times you might be available. This next week I'll talk the the powers that be and figure out when we could get a table. That would hopefully be arranged by the time we have the next meeting and we can pass around a sign up sheet or something.
Thanks so much, and again, let us know about the possibility of meeting a week from this Sunday.
