Salam girls,
I met the Vice Chair of Amnesty International Japan at a recent Amnesty event I attended, and she seemed really interested in high school Amnesty groups and offered to come visit Bronx Science's Amnesty as a guest speaker! But she travels a lot, so she needs to get back to me on which Thursdays she is available in New York City. In the meantime, we need to figure out what topic she could talk about. She said, "I could give a talk on the human rights situation in Japan, or something more specific. Death penalty is one option, but other hot issues include the recent "secrecy bill" that allows the govt to hide whatever information it thinks approprete, and the constitution revision draft by the ruling party, the LDP which strikes out most of the human rights related parts from the current Japanese constitution. The conservatives think that the concept of human rights is "western" and was imposed on the Japanese people against their will after the WWII. It might be interesting to discuss this cultural aspect of human rights. So, let me know what your members find interesting. I could give a brief introductory talk on the topic, and we can open up for discussion. " What do you guys think she should talk about?
