Salam girls!

I hope midyears went well for all of us, inshaa Allah!

Now that it's second semester, I really want us to go hardcore with Amnesty. We should have a general outline of what we plan on doing for the rest of the year. Below I tried to make a very rough calendar-type outline of what the rest of the year will look like. As you can see, it's VERY VERY incomplete right now -- so please reply to this email with changes or comments or things you'd like to see!

***A few notes***
           1) The responsibility of food should be rotated weekly. If we know we can't bring food on one day, we should arrange to switch our food day with someone else just for that week! (As of now, I put the food responsibilities in order of board member)
           2) For second semester, I think we should experiment with quick topics that last for a week, rather than stretching out a single topic for a month perhaps. This might keep members more interested, and it'll be interesting to change it up to see how it goes! :) If this doesn't go well, then no worries and we can go back to what we usually do!
           3) I want the members to get more involved with meetings! Usually our meetings consist of us talking and talking -- but we never hear the members. I tried to brainstorm a few ways to change this below (ex. debates, open discussions), but I need help from you all!
           4) Alhamdullilah the Hunger Banquet went great, and I found another cool thing we could do called Snacktivism! (Read below for what it is)
           5) Is HennaFest ever going to happen? Or the Faculty Fashion Show Fundraiser?

Thursday, February 6 – Human Trafficking (Relevant because the Superbowl just passed in NYC!)
     * Recent news (Ex. Madams busted in high-priced Super Bowl hooker ring)
     * Show parts of the Human Trafficking movie, but not the whole thing - enough to get them spooked/realize how serious the problem is
     * Food: Saima

Thursday, February 13 – Children's Rights/Orphans
    * Child soldiers - Right to Education - Orphans
    * Talk about different organizations that help these causes (Islamic Relief, UNICEF, etc.)
    * Give out paper bags for everyone to collect donations for the organizations, they will be collected when we come back from break, create a goal for the donation amount
   * Urgent Action: TWO MEN NEAR EXECUTION AFTER UNFAIR TRIAL
   * Food: Sumaiya

NO MEETING THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20 (Mid-Winter Break)

POSSIBLE EVENT/CHILL DAY DURING SPRING BREAK TO HANG OUT / MEET OTHER AMNESTY MEMBERS - I'm thinking Chipotle or Tangra Asian Fusion. (I would have chosen Sushi Island/Fatima's, but I think those are more MSA places, lol) What do you guys think - can we arrange this? I think it'd be really fun!!!!! I realized most of us don't really know each other and this should definitely change!

Thursday, February 27 – Death Penalty
   * Explain both sides of the issue, discuss how this is one of Amnesty International's more controversial campaigns
   * Ask members whether or not they believe it's right (People who think it's right go towards the windows, people who think it's wrong go towards the door, people who can't decide will go in the middle)
   * Each side must defend what they believe and make the middle group come to their side – whichever side gets the most people to take their side get a prize the next week!
   * Give the groups 10-15 minutes to prepare what they'll say, who speaks first, in what order their arguments will be, etc.
   * Urgent Action: ______I'll take care of this i'A__________
   * Food: Ayesha

Thursday, March 6 – Women's Rights
    * March 8 is International Women's Day
    * Show a chapter of Girl Rising (around 12 minutes long)
    * Have very casual and open discussion with group about why women's rights are beneficial for everyone, not just for women
   * Violence Against Women - Gender-based Discrimination - Women's Human Rights Defenders - Women, Peace, and Security
   * Urgent Action: ______I'll take care of this i'A__________
    * Food: Tahirah

Thursday, March 13 – Human Rights Quiz Bowl
    * Separate members into 4-5 teams (depending on how many people come)
    * Create game with all the different human rights topics we discussed in the past (Guantanamo, Migrant Rights, Poverty, Human Trafficking, etc.) and make questions from easy to difficult
    * Teams compete against each other and try to get the most points
    * Have little surprises and perks, like "Use Internet for one question" or "Take away another team's point" or " Get a hint" etc.
    * Food: Tabara

Thursday, March 20 – SNACKTIVISM (Prisoners of Conscience/Individuals at Risk)
    * During 10th period, set up one table in the middle of the room with a LOT of snacks, and set up the rest of the tables (except Mr. McNickle's table) all around the room in a circle
    * Set each table up with a different prisoner of conscience's description + letter to protest prisoner of conscience
    * Members will go around to each table to read the cases and sign the letters, while eating snacks from the middle
    * We will mail letters off
    * Food: All of us & possibly tell members to bring food as well

Thursday, March 27 –

Thursday, April 3 –

Thursday, April 10 –

NO MEETING THURSDAY, APRIL 17 (Spring Break)

Thursday, April 24 –

Thursday, May 1 –

For tomorrow's meeting, I'm going to print out 20ish copies of the attached "Human Trafficking" sheet (wiki summary of the movie since we're not going to watch the whole thing, facts about human trafficking, and safety tips)

I'm also going to print out 20ish copies of an Urgent Action letter i wrote that people could sign and we could send off this week or next week i'A

and i also found a good link we could watch the movie from in two parts instead of like a million: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_coH8x5w6M

if one of you could prepare like a short introduction about what human trafficking is (doesn't necessarily need to be a powerpoint!) then i could take care of the rest of the meeting!

ps we should go to Chipotle

Hey everyone!
Tomorrow I will not be attending the meeting. I have prepared a power point for our human trafficking meeting so you guys should be fine without me.
Here are some important reminders/notes to give everyone tomorrow.

3v3 soccer game will be happening.
As a board we need to discuss possible dates that we want for the match. After this, I can schedule dates for wolverine tv ads with Sam.  We need to arrange for either t-shirts or for some sort of laminated tag for students/teachers should be wearing to help identify their team numbers.

First thing we need is a date. I pasted the stuff above this doc.. Ill update the information here.

Here is the link to the doc

I have updated information on it about the meetings, the possible date I want the match to be, and the raincheck dates
I have also included the various teams we have. The link to the form for which team you want to join is also included. Did you guys have fun at the amnesty concert? My friends loved it!
My internet is being really slow. Bear with my late responses guys .

Is everyone good with Childrens' Rights being next week's topic?
I'm going to read out loud  a short personal account of a child soldier, and two of you could read the others. (I attached the doc)
We could also show them good, safe organizations that help out with children and orphans etc (since there are many NON-safe organizations that lie about true intentions)
Also, food should be either Saima (cause she couldn't come last time) or Sumaiya (cause this was her assigned week).

Does anyone live near a dollar store and could buy a pack of those brown bags used for lunch? I want us to give them out to the members and tell them to collect donations over the midwinter break for one of the organizations we talk about , and we could collect them back on the meeting when we come back. We could create club goals and individual goals as well.

ALSO, I forgot to give out Urgent Action letters last week, so towards the end of the meeting I'll ask people to sign this week's and last week's urgent action letter.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I want to let the members know that we're planning on having a lunch event over break, ask how many people think they might come, and where they want to go.

Ok guys,
Since we have 3 events that are coming up,
two of which are incredibly difficult to prepare for especially since it is the first time in bxsci history that they are happening, I have complied a document that includes the game plan for these three events. I also put deadlines that we have to work together to meet so that everything can go smoothly.

I have SGI this thursday :(  but if its completely impossible for us to do a board meeting any other time, then can you guys fill me in ?

and just to make a small note on the fashion show's outline, is there any way we can finalize a date for it this week/next week? shouldn't we be contacting sponsors a LOT earlier? I thought we would be asking stores to sponsor us over this mid-winter break.

I have to discuss an important issue with you guys,
Key Club went rock climbing over the weekend and then one of the kids broke their ankle. Their parents are suing the school. So now to even go to Harris Field, It would be considered a field trip and we will have to go through a lot of trouble. We need to get permission from people higher than Dr.Donahue in order to do Fifa now.

Also Ayesha
Tabara brought up a good point that that I wanted to discuss in the board meeting. I would have liked for all of us to be present but I guess we can tell you afterwards.
