The Georgia Legislative Session ended yesterday, and Advancing Justice-Atlanta has mostly positive news to report! The focus of our 2017 Policy Agenda was on laws that expand our immigrant rights, expand our voting rights, champion economic justice, and increase
access to education. We are happy to note many of the anti-immigrant and harmful bills to our communities have been defeated. HOWEVER the Georgia legislature passed last-minute anti-immigrant bills (House Bill 37 and 452)
Call Governor Deal and tell him to VETO House Bill 37 & 452
HB 37 - A bill to restrict funding from private institutions that protect undocumented students and enact sanctuary policies, a xenophobic and unnecessary bill that deters students from
attending school in the state.
HB 452 - A bill that targets immigrants by creating a public registry of noncitizen that have committed certain crimes and ADDED new language from SB 1, that would expand the definitions
of domestic terrorism, targeting activists and communities of color, particularly the Muslim community.
NOTE: The added language from SB 1 regarding domestic terrorism was voted down TWICE in the House. Politicians made deals to bring this bill back and pass it through at the last minute.
We cannot stand for political deals that infringe on our civil liberties.
Please call the Governor at 404-656-1776 and say
"Governor Deal, VETO HB 37 and 452."
