As many of you are already aware,we have been working on the
reclamation project of the abandoned "Ammons Family Cemetery" in
Marlboro County SC. We have discovered by researching documents in
Marlboro and surrounding counties that our Great Grandfathers,Joshua
and Thomas Ammons played a very inportant role in the War of
Independence.

Joshua served in the Continental Army with General Marquis de
LaFayette and Thomas was a horseman that rode with Francis Marion in
Colonel Parrot's unit.

We have located the burial site of these individuals and other family
members on the property of Don and Marty Rankin of Bennettsville SC.
This property where the cemetery is located is 129 acres of the
original 533 acres that belonged to Joshua Ammons.
We have many documents to support our findings, deeds, wills, eye
witness accounts of the burial site and perhaps most important is the
1922 survey of the Rankin property which shows the actual cemetery.

The site has been cleared and is ready for a very careful excavation
of the top layer. The graves have caved in to some degree. There are
no existing markers but one must remember, some of these burials took
place two hundred years ago. We are being very careful with the
activity on the site and have employed an equipment operator from
McColl SC that works only in cemeteries.

This site represents sacred ground for the Ammons relatives. This
project would not have been possible without the outstanding
cooperation of the Rankins. Marty Rankin also just happens to be the
President of the Marlboro County Historical Society.

It absolutely could not have been possible without the discovery of
one Bonnie Ammons Crowley Freeman, of Bennettsville, a cousin who is
decended from Jessie, son of Joshua and Elizabeth Parker Ammons. We
welcome any questions you might have and will continue to post the
pogress of this amazing find.
