The Rev John Ammons (Stephen, Ephriam,Thomas,Jacob,Jacob) was one of
the original founders of Mars Hill College. He is buried in the
Gabriels Creek Cemetery in Mars Hill Nc. His son John Judson Ammons is
buried there also.

I had the Rev John Ammons as the one born ca1770 who was a preacher
and wrote a book " A Brief History of the French Broad Association" .
The French Broad (Baptist) Association eventually became Mars Hill
College. Was there two John Ammons who were among the founders of
Mars Hill College?

war and a state senator from Bumcombe Cty in 1895.

I'd like to make a correction if I may. John Judson Ammons is buried in the
West Memorial Park Cem. Weaverville, N.C. There is a picture of his
headstone in this groups pictures. I am a member and contributor of
Find-A-Grave Memorial Website. There is a Memorial for him posted in
this cemetery. I have posted a number of Ammons Memorials which may
be of some interest to members of our group. It's a great site for
documentation of research, and pictures of our family members who
are no longer with us. F-A-G is a free website.

I am a G-Granddaughter of John R. and Martha (Higdon) Ammons.
My maternal Grandparents Richard "Alex" and Nora (Birdsong) Ammons.
one of the Ammons who came "out to Oregon"

Thanks TJ for the correction! That's what this site is all about, for
us to get it right about our relatives.

Thanks also, Thelma, for the tip on the website. I had never heard of
Find-a-grave Memorial website. That is fantastic. I looked up a few
a few Ammons ancestors there, and also a Houston. It was very
profitable. The only problem I encountered is that on that site, Rev.
Joshua's wife's name is spelled "Pheribee." I wish we had proof what
the correct spelling for Pherbie/Pheribee/Pheriba is. Her headstone,
which doesn't come through well in the photo on that page, gives her
name as Pheriba. I think making pictures of headstones available for
everyone is wonderful. Some of the oldest headstones in the Sugar
Fork Cemetery are illegible now, and that is very disappointing for
all of us who have ancestors buried there.
