Japanese major Toyota has agreed to invest a token $50m in Tesla, the California-based producer of battery-powered cars, as it looks to extend its presence in the petrol-electric hybrid market. The Financial Times relays that Toyota will become the second global auto to invest in Tesla, a 2004 start-up company backed by several high-profile Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. The other major name to invest in Tesla was Daimler, which also paid $50m for a 10 percent stake last May. As part of the Toyota deal, Tesla will take over the investor’s New United Motor Manufacturing plant, in Freemont, California. Some commentators say Tesla appears to have struggled with supply chain and cost issues in the past, so the Toyota tie-in should give the company a big leg-up. The plan is to introduce the new Tesla Model S saloon at the Fremont, CA factory, with initial volumes of 20,000 cars a year promised from 2012. Musk has always had a grand vision for Tesla, and reckons that as the plant expands it could employ up to 10,000 workers but only 1,000 will be required for it to build the Tesla S initially. Toyota president praised Tesla for displaying a “dedication to monozukuri,” referring to the name Toyota gives to its own manufacturing style.
