May, 2010 in Travel News (AP Photo/Wong Maye-E ) It’s hard to avoid seeing the pictures in the news about the current crackdown in Thailand. Rioting and fierce fires have spread though Thailand’s capital after a military offensive put down weeks of anti-government protests. Protesters are demanding fresh polls because they say the government – which came to power through a parliamentary d eal rather than an election – is illegitimate. Bangkok’s current status can only be described as chaotic. It is HIGHLY advisable that travelers avoid visiting Bangkok and other Thai cities during these times of fresh and violent protest. Over 40 people have died since last week when troops ringed “red-shirt” protesters, who have been protesting since March 14. There are over 20 fires burning across the city and many hotels and shops have closed due to the “red-shirt” protest occupation of the shopping district. Suvarnabhumi Airport is still operational and transit flights have not been affected. So, if you’re just transiting or having a layover in Bangkok, your flight should be fine. But, it is always advisable to contact your airline to stay up to date on your flights status. Since this is an unpredictable situation, it is unknown when things will settle.
