From Sister Confianza
Thanks to all of you who responded so quickly and generously to our recent plea for donations. I got some of my lab tests done at the public health clinic in Limon, and the rest in Tocoa. Overall, they look good, thank God. I'm just a little low on iron and Vitamin D, so I am now taking supplements.
A couple of weeks ago, a porch was added to Centro de Salud, paid for by the new mayor. This long-awaited addition creates a covered waiting area outside the new lab and office space (on the left in the photo).
Last Thursday, we got the requested money to Doctora Perla, and she purchased the air conditioning unit that same day. It was installed on Monday. Today I went by the clinic and found that they have just moved all the lab equipment into the new space and are getting it organized. Here is the lab tech Irina (who finally has a permanent position) with microbiologist Perla (right) and the new AC unit:
You may remember that over the last couple of years we helped pay for the renovation of the space as well as the purchase and installation of solar panels. The great news is that the solar energy is able to run the AC as well as all the lab equipment! This means that they won't have to close on days when the state electricity goes out -- which is amazingly often. The lab will be fully operational next week!
Thank you again for your support of our patients. The quality of health care has improved dramatically in recent years by having this lab.
Bendiciones,

PS Cooper, our dedicated environmental health coordinator, stopped by this morning to vaccinate our cats for rabies. He and his helpers make sure all dogs and cats are vaccinated every year. We continue to support the maintenance of his indispensable motorcycle, and gave him $260 to get the oil changed (a bimonthly task) as well as get new tires. We knew they needed to be replaced, and both blew out recently. The fixed up motorcycle will allow him to help the immunization campaign in the rural mountains next week.
