You may remember that our aspirant Annette is currently in Jamaica.  She had gone there from Haiti a year ago in order to join a religious community, but they closed their formation program within a month of her arrival and sent her home.  Instead of going back to Haiti, she began volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa's order) in Kingston.  She receives a stipend for her weekend shift helping care for indigent women and feeding the homeless.

When we saw that Hurricane Melissa was affecting the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and headed straight toward Jamaica, we began praying hard.  On Sunday afternoon, Annette sent us a message, saying "Jamaica has a lot of rain and wind, my family in Haiti is having problems now the wind is destroying their house."

Melissa hit the western part of Jamaica as a category 5 storm yesterday.  Gracias a Dios, we heard from Annette again last evening. Though they are receiving an inordinate amount of rain, Kingston -- being situated on a bay on the southeast coast of the island --did not bear the brunt of the storm.  Everyone who wasn't asked to evacuate was told to shelter in place, so she is stuck at her workplace, helping out when other employees can't get to work.  Last night, Annette said, "I watch over them (the women), I watch over the wind and water and I push the water that enters the house."

Today Hurricane Melissa passed over eastern Cuba as a category 3, and is now bearing down on the Bahamas as a category 2.  Let us continue to pray for Jamaica and all those who have been and are being affected by this storm.

Bendiciones,
Sister Confianza
