From Sister Confianza:
Last week, we tried to have our 8-day Yearly Monastery Retreat. Our selected book was The Rule of Benedict, augmented by the original hagiographical "biography" of Benedict of Nursia by Gregory the Great. Unfortunately, Sister Alegria got quite sick (a diarrheal illness) just two days into the retreat, and is still recovering. So we were a little more of a nursing home than a retreat center, though we were still able to do a bit of reading (via audiobook). One neat thing was that Annette could also read along with us in French, as the text of The Rule of Benedict is available online in many languages. She and I also had a couple of nice videocall conversations, which we rarely do.
(Speaking of Annette, she had an appointment today to order her Jamaican police record, which she can pick up in another week. After that, she will finally be able to apply for the visas.)
This week, I have been working on sewing another blouse and gardening, as I ease myself back into my permaculture course which has been on break between academic quarters. Today, with the help of Lorany's two older daughters (16 and 13), we planted the garden beds. I'd planted one a few weeks ago with cowpeas, which are up and growing. Today we filled a second bed with cucumber, the third with another type of green bean, and the last one with okra. I look forward to continuing to work with these lovely girls. (Sorry I didn't manage to get a photo of them.)
Tomorrow I go up to the motherhouse, which is looking great. This photo is from Sept 5. The floor and window shutters are in and the walls are whitewashed!
