From Sister Confianza:
A couple of weeks ago, Tito and I were invited to the Jr-Sr High School by the director to organize volunteer work for getting a garden started for Comunion H's children's feeding program. The two ag teachers, Cesar and Jerardo, are now supervising two groups of students to create garden beds here on the site where we live. On Friday, they brought their 9th grade ag students over, and in the afternoon the seniors came to fulfill their environmental community service requirement.
First, the 9th-grades cleared an area in front of the orphanage weeds with hoes and machetes. This whole half of the property had been leveled and filled with "material"
when the orphanage was built in 2013.
Next, they measured two garden beds and dug them out with picks and hoes. The best part was discovering that the fill material is actually good brown earth!
Finally, they smoothed the beds out with rakes.
In the afternoon, the seniors built a third bed.
They hope to put in another couple of beds this next week. The next step is to bring in some cow manure and truly fertile earth from a nearby farm in order to create ready-to-use beds that we can plant when the rains come. Now we just need to obtain some seeds...
I am glad to be a part of this, even though I couldn't contribute much as I have been sick with long COVID this past week.
Bendiciones,
