Hinew here but a long time user of CCleaner and I apologise if this has been mentioned before (I did a search but couldn't see anything) but what about CCleaner having the option to clear Windows event logs?
The problem with blindly deleting those logs can be a big issue. For example when a piece of software is having invisible/hidden issues in the background such as an anti-virus/anti-malware with something failing, i.e.; not fully protecting the system.
Anyhow, CCleaner's "windows logs files -system ... analyze" does not find them, and adding them to "custom files and folders ... analyze" does not find them. Unlocker shows them locked by ...system32/services.exe, but you can delete them. After that, the event viewer still shows the same info as before they were deleted. Cannot tell what would happen after a reboot.
Login every so often I clear my event viewer logs out after checking them out. I have done this for years now with no issues. The thing that worries me about something else doing it instead of me is that any issues in the logs I may have wanted to look at are gone, and can never be got back.
However, since you never had a problem for years, I don't really think you will have any problem in the next several years as well. Even if you do, there are always ways to check things. For instance:
I need the event viewer to see which event id errors occurred at a specific time and how it relates to the said software. Also things like the beta software affecting auto retrieval of certificates and Windows Time. This info is then relayed back to the software devs
When I try to open, it seems like it crashes immediately, no ccleaner window or whatever, can't even see the service starting in task manager (it does seem to start for about a second and then it's gone). Tried ccleander.exe /debug & ccleaner64.exe /debug but nothing, but this is expected since ccleaner just won't start at all.
I tried looking into eventvwr.msc - windows logs - apps and there I see event 1001 : APPCRASH (but without info), tried uninstall, tried portable, removed ccleaner reg.keys from windows registry, but I cannot seem to fix it :'( and I'm kind off running out of ideas right now.
this does help, now I can open it, but not in my normal account. I still think it has something to do with microsoft defender / security center though. Because when I download ccleaner with edge it does complain about the file and if I whish to keep it anyway, I do think this does prevent ccleaner from opening. I removed Sophos because of testing purposes but that does not make any difference. I do not have problems with any other software so that is why I think Windows is somehow blocking ccleaner. When I try another account on my workstation I do have exactly the same problem, ccleaner will not open.
As with so many things relating to CCleaner, there's a grain of truth to that story heavily wrapped in several layers of myth. There was an issue back in July with Microsoft taking a dislike to the installer (although not CCleaner itself) which was solved two weeks later with CCleaner 5.70. Any "news" about CCleaner tends to turn into "olds" pretty quickly
There does not seem to be an issue with Windows 10 20H2, per se: 5.74 was tested against 20H2 prior to release and I upgraded myself to 20H2 a couple of weeks ago to see for myself how 5.74 update scenarios would work and have not seen any changes.
That said, there are a couple of releases planned for December that just focus on minor tweaks and bug fixes - predominantly ones that impact corner-cases and small audiences - so it is possible that any issues that may be impacting your specific system configuration may be mopped up with those. But in the meantime, any additional information that impacted customers are able to provide regarding their individual setups would be gratefully received.

Everything worked fine before Windows 10 update to latest 20H2, I disabled Defender / Microsoft security and Sophos (anti4us) but without result (no solution). The tricky part is that when I start Windows in 'safe mode', there's no problem running CCleaner. But in 'normal mode', nothing happens. I can try other login account or a new account, but with the same outcome, CCleaner just won't start/open.
edit: BUT only auto.start CCleaner at logon and then I can open it, but when I close CCleaner and then try to re-open, again nothing...really weird... (and after 2nd reboot this also doesn't help though)
Hi @Epic Considering how CCleaner does open in Safe Mode, you may want to perform a 'clean-boot' in Windows, using a process of elimination to see if you can pinpoint what prevents CCleaner from being able to open in the normal mode of Windows.
It may be clashing because Citrix Receiver reached end of maintenace on Sep 30th 2020 (about a month before you first encountered the issue with a new CCleaner version), and reached end of life on 31st Dec 2020, - so it is no longer maintained or updated.

Was this an oversight or a policy decision? It was certainly convenient. If you try to delete the Old Windows installation folder after the biannual update (like, right now, for instance) you have to sit there and watch it, interminably, so you can field any "helpful" questions from the system that stop the process. When CCleaner did it, it just did it and you could walk away during the entire long process.
Cleaning the windows.old folder breaks windows for many people. Some of the stuff in the folder are still used by Windows and slowly are migrated out. Use windows inbuilt cleaner to remove window.old (if storage sense even does that now that cleanmgr is gone).
If you run Storage Sense 'Free up space now' then you should see it scanning for "Windows Update Clean-up'...... BUT-
Unfortunately Storage Sense seems to be broken on my 1809 and isn't scanning at all?
EDIT- SS is in fact scanning and will find 'Previous Windows instalation(s)' - it's just taking it's time to show anything on the progress bar when it starts scanning.
Leave it a while and the progress shows, and the list of things to be cleared is populated.
Hello, I've been using CCleaner professional on my PC and laptop for quite a while now. Recently, microsoft did one of their forced updates on my laptop, and now I cannot get CCleaner to open. (windows 10)
Also what Windows 10 version do you have now, and what AV are you using?
As you just got a forced update you will previously have had Windows 10 1903, that became 'end of life' on 8th December so they are now forcing updates to it.
Which version you have been updated to will depend on your computer.
Seeing as CCleaner stopped working for you following a Windows Update there is something that you should check.
Check Windows settings for Apps & features to make sure it hasn't defaulted to only allow apps from the Microsoft Store, it has been known to do that after a Windows Update.
If it has then change it back to 'Anywhere'.
The latest CCleaner version is 5.88, if you don't have it already then you can download the installer from here and simply install it on top of your current version, ie. no need to uninstall first.
If you are still having issues after doing that then would be the time to try uninstalling CCleaner and doing a fresh install.
If you do uninstall then make a note of your registered name and licence key before uninstalling, you'll need it to re-register the new install.
PS. AV is just shorthand for AntiVirus, Windows Defender is the standard one that all Windows 10 has and is very good - some people do like to use a different one though which can sometimes cause problems.
Norton is good. (In fact they now own Piriform/CCleaner since they bough Avast).
Microsoft Defender is now also fine, it ranks as good in tests as most that you can buy and better than many, and as it's already included with Windows why pay for something else?
If you don't put another AV on your machine, or uninstall an AV that is there, Defender will take over automatically.
Microsoft Defender isn't as feature-packed as the top antivirus competition, but it's more accurate than some big-name commercial products, and is much less likely to cause issues with your other applications. If simplicity (or price) is top of your priority list, it's a reasonable choice.
