Healthy Ambassador Program 2013-2014
The mission of Mentoring in Medicine & Science (MIMS) is to increase the presence of underrepresented healthcare professionals through mentorship, career exposure, and leadership development.
Healthy Ambassador Program Purpose:
The Healthy Ambassador Program (HAP) is an 8-month program where high school students, college students, post-baccalaureate students and college alumni are trained on a standardized health curriculum. The purpose of the Healthy Ambassador Program is to raise awareness about health inequities that disproportionately affect student's communities while promoting leadership development.
Program Benefits:
Healthy Ambassadors will:
- Be trained and educated through a series of monthly workshops on anatomy and the prevention, treatment, and physiology of various illnesses
- Learn about public health and community health issues
- Receive and practice public speaking, health education, and leadership skills while educating K-12 students on diseases and illnesses during the workshops at school sites
- Receive peer-to-peer mentorship and health professional mentorship
- Participate in professional and career development workshops networking skills, communications skills, graduate school paths, etc.)
- Shadow health professionals after passing an additional screening process
What is the Healthy Ambassador Program?
Health Education Training
- Healthy Ambassadors will be trained from September 2013 through December 2014 by health professionals on the health education curriculum
Health Education Curriculum includes:
- Nutrition with emphasis on Diabetes and Hypertension
- Sexual Health
- Mental Health
- Substance Abuse
- Disaster Preparedness and CPR
- Healthy Ambassadors will also receive professional and career development trainings at they continue their path to various healthcare careers
Community Education:
- From January 2014 to April 2014, Healthy Ambassadors will educate students in local K-12 schools and after-school enrichment programs on the health education topics: nutrition, mental health, disaster preparedness and CPR, sexual health, and substance abuse
- Healthy Ambassadors will also educate the community on different health disparities through workshops and health fairs.
Important Dates:
February 27, 2013: HAP Online Application Opens
May 15, 2013 at 11:59pm: HAP Application is DUE
May 22, 2013: Students chosen and notified of interview
May 29-June 3, 2013: Interviews
June 10, 2013: Students notified of program acceptance
Program Duration
Students that are accepted are REQUIRED to participate for the entire length of the program.
Minimum requirements for applicants:
- Interest in career in health
- Disadvantaged or underrepresented background
- Commit to 4-8 hours a month from September- April
- Available on a monthly Friday afternoon from September-April
- Facilitate a least THREE (3) workshops for K-12 students in Spring 2014
- Volunteer at community health fairs and events
