Hi everyone,

I wanted to share this article about a young white woman who is upset about not getting into the choice college. I think this article represents a lot of things we talk about in class -- how certain people are able to "win" because of their social status, financial standing, and power. This young woman represents that power because she is white, has many talents, and yet is blaming people of color (people with less opportunities) for not getting into a certain school. So she decided to take it to the Supreme Court (which is a huge deal in America).

Usually, when people of color or disadvantaged people are not able to get into their choice college or job, they feel they can't do anything about it. Yet, somehow, this young woman believes she is more deserving than others.

Essentially, this is a very poignant example of white privilege in America: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/09/us/supreme-court-to-hear-case-on-affirmative-action.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&

*Affirmative Action is a policy that allows colleges and workplaces to take into consideration people's backgrounds, and accept people based on their hard work, not their privileges.

As you can tell, I'm very upset about this article. Let me know if you want to talk about it over coffee sometime. =)

Sincerely,
C. Giang
