I noticed this about a week ago and thought it was just a transient
problem, but it's still occurring on every state gauge page I've tried.
All gauges read "n/a", and there is no color coding to indicate current
levels. The correct level is shown if you click on a particular reach
and pull up the page for that reach.

This is a function of the search and filter listing. If you go directly to each state page from the river info menu, gauges are good.

I guess the problem was that the state gauge pages have a new URL now.  I had bookmarked the old URLs.  So, for instance,

https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/state-summary/?state=NC

no longer works, but

https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-index/state/USA-NCR

does.

That doesn't make sense.  I never use the search function.  This is simply a matter of it working one week and not working the other week.  The same issue occurs on my phone and my desktop.

Yep, you had an old page bookmarked. The reason it stopped working is that that old page was not hooked up to the new gauge service, which we turned off last week. Thanks for the sleuthing! Very helpful.
