Here is a link to research I did on Marshall with a quotation from his
daughter on Marshall's religious creed:

Marshall's daughter's words:

"The reason why he never communed was, that he was a Unitarian in
opinion, though he never joined their society. He told her he believed
in the truth of the Christian Revelation, but not in the divinity of
Christ; therefore he could not commune in the Episcopal Church."

The deistic and unitarian folks tended to be the ones who got up and
walk out at communion time in the Episcopal and other Christian
Churches. They did this because they didn't believe in what the act
symbolized: Christ's Atonement.

George Washington, btw, systematically avoided communion in his
Anglican/Episcopal Church.
