Dear SAS Members,

The Executive Board of The Society for Archaeological Sciences is proud to announce a new partnership with the Australasian Research Cluster for Archaeological Science (ARCAS) to co-sponsor its upcoming 2021 meeting.  Please read the attached letter from Vice President for Intersociety Relations Andrew Zipkin for details on this conference and other SAS plans for 2021.

Letter Summary
  • Free virtual meeting: The 2021 ARCAS conference will be held virtually on March 19th-20th Melbourne time/March 18th-19th USA time zones.  The conference has no registration or other associated fees; abstract submission is currently open and closes on February 12th.
  • Student prizes: SAS will sponsor a USD $100 student presentation prize and a $50 runner-up student prize at ARCAS; presenters do not need to be a member of ARCAS or SAS to be eligible.  Both awardees will also receive a year of free membership in SAS.

  • Support for Indigenous archaeology: SAS will also sponsor a USD $150 prize for the best presentation by an Indigenous Australian, developed in collaboration with the ARCAS organizers and La Trobe University, and through them, in consultation with representatives of the Indigenous Australian community.  In addition, every Indigenous Australian presenter at the conference will be offered a year of complementary membership in SAS; either donated by the Society or sponsored by La Trobe University.
  • Archaeo chem sessions at SciX: SAS will organize and co-sponsor two invited speaker symposiums at the SciX analytical chemistry and spectroscopy meeting in September 2021.  The conference is scheduled to be held in-person in Providence, Rhode Island, USA and has a robust virtual alternate option based on the successful 2020 online meeting.

Best regards,

Kyle Freund, Ph.D.
