Forsyth Park is a vast city park created in the 1840s. Originally spanning a mere 10 acres of land, it was expanded over the next couple decades to encompass its current space of 30 acres, thanks to a generous donation of land by the eponymous Georgia governor John Forsyth. Stylistically, the park was influenced by the urban renewal of Paris in the nineteenth century.
Added in 1858, the park's fountain is reminiscent of those created by architect Jacques Ignace Hittorff in Paris' Place de la Concorde. At this time, Parisian urban planning was centered on the development of residential neighborhoods radiating out from a central green space. The fountain serves as the focal point of a long vista all the way from City Hall.
