Frilly petals of sriracha, black truffle, and pesto deviled eggs bloom on a platter.

One of the first recipes for stuffed hard-boiled eggs was from Platina's De honesta voluptate et valetudine, a 15th century Italian cookbook. This recipe mashed yolks with raisins, cheese, and minced herbs; the egg halves were then placed back together and the entire orb was fried in oil. 16th century cookbooks introduced the most current method of boiling the eggs, removing the yolks, mixing them with spices, and putting the egg yolk mixture back into the whites and shells.

The term "deviled," in reference to food, first appeared in print in 1791. James Boswell spoke of dining on "devilled bones [sic]" for supper in the biography The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. A "deviled" meal refers to any dish prepared with hot seasonings, such as cayenne or mustard.

Supper; Philadelphia, PA.
