Hello everyone,

We had 12 riders today who bundled up for a somewhat chilly and breezy ride. As Cindy perfectly put it, "Even with the cold, it's still a beautiful day to ride." What a difference from last week, when we were all in short sleeves.

We headed down the road toward Burney Park, but since there was a busload of tourists, we didn't stay long and continued to the pier. After a nice rest stop there, we headed back to Peter's Point. A few of us also stopped at SuperCorsa to say hello to Drew.

All in all, it was a very nice day for a social ride. Enjoy the pictures and see you next week.

Best,
Amy Kahn

Hi everyone,

We had a great turnout today with seven riders for our Wednesday Social Trail Ride. We started with six, and Bill B. joined us shortly after Burney Park. It was a perfect day for a ride with blue skies, great temperatures, and manageable wind.

Well, Amelia Island Parkway was still open to through traffic today, we know it's upcoming closure is coming any day now, so I suggested to the group we try another route until the Parkway re-opens on May 5th.  How about moving the start of our Wednesday ride to Crane Island?

I created a route that is 15.8 miles long. We would start at the Amelia Island Soccer Field (3298 Baily Rd, Fernandina Beach 32034), ride through Crane Island and then ride down Simmons to 1st street, get on S. Flechter and pick the trail up at Peter's Point. We would then turn around at Burney Park and ride the same way back to Crane Island. Starting April 8th the ride will go back to a 9:00am start time.

Let me know your thoughts!

All the Best,

Amy

I think that’s a good idea, but how much longer if we continue to the fishing bridge? I’ll miss seeing the fishing activity at the bridge.

Amy,
Thanks for leading yesterday.

Regarding future route.
If an alternate route for our Wednesday social recreational trail rider has us riding at all on Fletcher (in very heavy traffic), the detour route, how would folks get from the right shoulder (assuming no one is parked on it) to the left turn lane to get to the AIT trailhead at Peters Point if traffic is backed up far north of there, as it was this morning at 8:30 am . The lines are just too long (2 miles this afternoon).
Is there a way to stay on ARTs only or AIT only for 15 miles, and keep the riders only on trails  off the road?  Wouldn't it be best to keep riders away from such busy roads?
Bill

Amy, Bill makes a good point on the cross to Peter’s point.  That is certain to be “hairy”.  As an alternative you could ride up to the Parkway turn right and make a U-turn near the entrance to the Preserve (with AI closed there is very little traffic on AI North of the light.  That would allow using the light controlled crosswalk at Fletcher to catch the AIT.
