Today's weather conditions lived up to the forecast: HOT! It was about 85 degrees, air temperature, when I arrived at Main Beach to welcome cyclists who were willing to endure a blazing hot sun to go for a bike ride. We had 16 fun-loving NFBC registered riders, plus one also fun non-registered rider who showed up late. We also welcomed a new member, Steve, and a semi-new member, Jon, along with the usual motley crew...and of course, Denis, who is my hero, one of many.
The morning got so hot that Don T and I bailed out on most of the ride, instead lazily pedaling around in the shade of Ft Clinch. The responsibilities of leading were assumed by the wonderful Mike L, who later reported that Steve had a flat tire just as they were leaving the state park. Amy K quickly came to the rescue and promptly fixed the flat, under the watch of Mike L. Amy knows what she is doing, putting years of practice and experience to work.
Meanwhile, yours truly experienced an "incident" resulting in a skinned forearm and elbow, no serious injuries, no NFBC incident report required. Don and I were riding a loop on the "Roller Blade" road that leads to the state park back gate, restricted to park employees, emergency vehicles, and registered campers towing boats to the boat ramp. Sure enough, here came a huge Bubba truck towing a huge boat taking up the whole road, coming within inches of hitting me as I hit the gravel of Park Manager Heath's driveway, and down I went. Owie! Truck & trailer kept on going out the gate, no apologies, no concerns. It could have been worse!
Another reminder that this is a dangerous sport we love, so keep on being careful out there--and keep on having fun.
Love y'all,
Susan T
