With bright sunshine and temperatures in the low '50s, 25 registered cyclists (and more) showed up at Main Beach this morning to go for a bike ride. Even the wind seemed to be relatively well behaved today...until it kicked up out of the NNE, providing a challenging headwind. Only St. Louis snowbird Paula H complained about the wind--but nobody complained when Annie passed around some Dove milk and dark chocolate Valentine's Day treats.
Sallie M was curious as to why the Ft Clinch State Park flags were flying at half staff. She later reported that Gov. DeSantis had declared today to be Marjory Stoneman Douglas Remembrance Day, in memory of the terrible shooting that took place at a high school in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018. The high school was named for Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a remarkable woman who accomplished a lot in her long life--including an important book, The Everglades: River of Grass. Thanks go out to Peter B and Mike L who assumed the responsibilities of leading the ride today when Don T and I bailed out early and headed home for more chocolates. The only mayhem I heard about was Allen G stopping to help Ron R fix a flat caused by one of those pesky wires that somehow find their way into bicycle tires. Otherwise, good times were had by all. Happy Valentine's Day!
