SOAP as an adapter?

Has anyone attempted to create an ambitious adapter based on an
arbitrary, proprietary SOAP API? I need to hook up to Salesforce.com's
SOAP API. There's the activesalesforce gem that's an ActiveRecord
adapter, which is great if I only need to connect to one Salesforce
account in my app, but I need to be able to connect to any number of
Salesforce accounts during runtime.
Has anyone tried something similar? Or am I just insane?
