(The topics will be presented by a Mandarin-speaking Speech-Language
Pathologist. )

Goals:
1. To provide Chinese parents chances to:
a. share experiences
b. support each other
2. To provide Chinese parents opportunities to:
a. Learn about therapeutic services
b. Develop reasonable expectations about therapeutic outcomes
c. Learn about normal and atypical speech-language development in
children
3. To help Chinese parents develop a better understanding of:
a. Canadian systems
b. The impact of cultural differences on accessing services

Each session lasts for one and a half hours and includes:
1. Welcome: Get to know each other and share experiences (15 minutes)
2. S-LP presents topic of the week (30 minutes)
3. Break (10 minutes) Light refreshments will be provided
4. Discussion of the topic (20 minutes)
5. Wrap up: Session summary and introduction of topic for the next
session (15 minutes)

Schedule and Fee Structure:
1. Group runs once a week for 6 weeks and costs $120 to be paid by the
first session
2. There will be no refunds for missed sessions
3. Groups meets Wednesday nights from 7:00 – 8:30 pm

Topics:
Session 1: Services available for children with ASD and how to access
them
Session 2: The importance of play in language development
Session 3: How to help your child develop social skills
Session 4: Similarities and differences between typically developing
children and children with ASD
Session 5: The differences in parenting style between Chinese and
Canadian culture (beliefs and value systems)
Session 6: The importance of keeping your first language
