Between the World and Me in PDF

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is a short book written by American author Ta-Nehisi Coates and written as an open letter to his own teenage son about his African American son. It's written as a private letter to the son, addressing him simply as "My Little Brother." In between he shares personal memories from growing up in a Black community in the south, about growing up with a double life and even about the death of a close friend who he never got to meet. I really don't know if it will hit home with kids, but at least Coates is putting some of the spotlight on some very common feelings felt by so many kids of color in America. The book has received critical acclaim, not only from African Americans themselves, but also from many readers of color who feel the same way that he does about his family's Blackness.

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is definitely geared toward kids, but like most children's books, it doesn't have a lot going for it, in terms of substance or sophistication. The book's basic premise is that a child is raised by his white mother and feels like he's "between the world and me." This is done through a number of narrations and reflections by various people, most of them unnamed. The overall effect is to make the reader feel as though they are along for the ride, as if they're not really part of the experience, except as observing, rather than participating. The result is that most of the book reads as a diary, as if Coates is describing events in his own life, and this is okay, since the experience is universal for all children.
But despite its lacking plot, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is still a remarkably engaging read. It's full of humor, sad moments, and just about everything you'd expect from a first novel. It won't win any awards, but this isn't your dad's book. It's a children's book about a little black child, telling the story to entertain.
