Give Me Liberty!: An American History in PDF
Give Me Liberty! An American History by Foner explains the context of the American revolution and the reason why we are so divided right now. Foner does a great job of tying everything in the historical context and showing how the framers of the Constitution wrote with very little political influence from those who oppose them at every turn. He shows how the slave trade was such an integral part of the economic system that those who were against it at first were the people building the economic engine that would eventually crush the slave trade. He then goes into the history of the Civil War and how it s badly divided along political lines once again because of the war itself.

Give Me Liberty! The American history is quite fascinating as it reveals how the Constitution was weakened in the Articles of Organization for the First National Bank of the United States because of the Northern States' anti-federalist sentiment and how the Articles of Union was left as a bad deal for the South because it allowed the Northern States undue control over the coinage. Then when the war was over and there was no longer a need for protection from foreign armies, the Articles of Organization were weakened even more and now they are not nearly as effective as they should be. This book gives an excellent history lesson.
Give Me Liberty! an American History by Foner also gives us some good lessons for today. One of the lessons he teaches is the importance of having friends around because it is often said that you must be a friend to those you want to have around. Foner teaches us that it is not just enough to be a friend to those who share your beliefs but that we must be willing to work with them to make things happen - even if it sometimes means that we will have to go against what many of our fellow citizens want.
