Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong PDF

"Lies My Teacher Told Me" by Loewen Williams is a great little book that highlights some of the most important lessons of our time, namely: don't Believe Everything Your Teachers Say, especially if You've Been Wronged Before, and Don't Trust Anyone Who Says Things You've Already Heard. Williams also does a good job of making us feel like experts, because in essence he is encouraging us to question everything that we've ever been taught. The majority of people, after all, simply believe what they've been taught, and if they can only hear two or three different opinions, they'll adopt the first that sounds good to them. That's not an easy task when you're dealing with young children, but Loewen Williams does a great job of teaching parents how to deal with challenging teenagers.

I don't want to give too much away, because this book is extremely close to home, and I am a huge advocate for accountability and mutual accountability between teachers and students. That being said, this book will make some readers uncomfortable, and I understand that since this is a book written by a teacher, some students will be a little leery. Luckily, however, once you read through the entirety of "Lies My Teacher Told Me", you will find that most of it is dry humor that doesn't take itself too seriously.
As someone who grew up in the Christian church, I found Williams' humorous tone and style of teaching refreshing and effective. The reality is that our youth pastor, whether he's the principal or just down the street, is tasked with teaching kids to be honest, accountable, and respectful towards one another. We must all hold ourselves to a higher standard, and I'm sure that many adults feel the same way. If you have a chance to read this book, I would highly recommend it to anyone who's had a tough time with their own teen life, because while it may not have relevance to current events, it will still do a great deal to help kids appreciate and learn from their parents' mistakes.
