Dear Kathy Hoffman,
Paul Grossman, Hasting College of Law instructor, in his article published in the Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability (2009) and at AHEAD conferences has indicated that the "perfect storm" of veterans attending college is coming. The perfect storm has made landfall and these veterans are having major difficulty in their math courses which Paul also predicted. These veterans have now joined the group of students with LD, ADHD and TBI that have problems passing math.
Colleges and universities are now recognizing their difficulty in helping these students pass math courses and graduate. This is especially true of wounded warriors with PTSD and/or TBIs. These wounded warriors will need additional understanding about their math learning problems and appropriate accommodations and instruction, however, re is very little information is on this subject.
The Mathematics and Disabilities Handbook: Guide for Students with LD, ADHD, TBI and Wounded Warriors -- eBook (www.academicsuccess.com<http://pull.msg-edu.com/p/861-1AF7/69297344/html001-www.academicsuccess.com.html>) by Dr. Nolting is the fourth handbook in a series to help students with disabilities succeed in math. The handbook has research and suggestions for disability coordinators, learning resource centers, math department chairs, veteran coordinators, math instructors, counselors and deans. It has the most recent information on how LD, ADHD, TBI and PTSD affect math learning. The handbook suggests instructional strategies, math study skills and appropriate accommodations/strategies that pertain to the student, instructor, counselor and institution. It also can be used as a legal reference for appropriateness of accommodations, course substitutions, testing accommodations, and as a guide writing appropriate policies and procedures in light of the revised ADA.
