Need help with pencasting and preprinted notes

I've recently learned how to pencast and cannot wait to use it with my
online classes. It will make sending problems out to students and
virtual office hours so much better.
The problem is using it easily with my interactive notes and workbooks
I've written for the classes. I want to be able to complete the notes
and have students hear my voice explaining them as they're fill in,
then post that for them to use. I've learned about printing Word or
Adobe documents onto Livescribe paper and then combining the notes and
pencastings together as a layered watermark in Adobe. That would work
on occasion but I can't imagine using that process for hundreds of
pages of notes. I've seen some instructors use tablet PCs with
Camtasia to write directly onto their notes. That's very slick and I
would love to do that but I don't have a tablet PC. I purchased a
Livescribe tablet so that I could use it to mark up my notes but I
worry about how easy that will be to do. You would looking at your
screen but your pen is on the tablet, not the screen. It seems
awkward.
I'm wondering about an Ipad. Is there some way I could use a stylus
to write on the notes (like a tablet PC) and record my voice but not
have to pay so much for a tablet PC?
I'm willing to spend some money but I want to spend it wisely on a
platform that will be easy to use for a long time to come. Do you
have any suggestions?

I don't think you can do what you want to do with a smartpen. I wish you
could because I use a smartpen a lot. However, you can do it with an Ipad
and the app that Sam mentioned, Show Me.

It's a little tricky to make it all work, but not too bad. I created the
file on my PC. Then I used Snag It to capture the screen and save the
file as a picture (any screen capture software would work, such as
Snipping Tool). I emailed the picture to my Ipad and saved it in the
camera roll. In Show Me, you can add any picture to the background, then
start the video.
Total time -- 10 minutes. Now that I know how to do it, total time would
be about 2 minutes for the next video.
The link above was my first video with Show Me. I learned a couple of
things quickly.
1. Leave more space between problems.
2. Invest in a stylus (I was just using my finger to do the writing)
If you didn't like storing your videos on their server, you could use
Camtasia or Jing to capture them and save them to your computer. Show Me
also has an option for uploading the video to Facebook. You could make a
Facebook page for your class and put all the videos there too.

I asked the experts at the Apple store if you can use a stylus with an ipad. You cannot.
Price does not need to be an obstacle. I just bought a barely used Tablet pc for $500. It is my third tablet. I can lecture from it and record my lectures. Its easy to do. I will never go back.

I use an Airliner and Camtasia for making videos and my live office hours. This is a little expensive. However, Bamboo tablets are reasonable try the following link:

sells their overstock directly on Ebay (screen name: fujitsu) so you
know you can trust them. after an extensive review, there are 4
tablets i would buy: Fujitsu T730/731, HP 2730/2760, Asus eee slate
121, ASUS Eee PC T101MT.
The fujitsu and HP (several model numbers for the same computer line)
are 12" tablet pc's, they are comparable, and considered to be best in
class. If you want a slate, The Asus 121 is a 12" slate running
Windows 7 that gets excellent reviews. If you want cheap, the Asus 101
is a 10" tablet PC - its available new for $500, though it gets
mediocre reviews.

The most recent advances in tablet technology involve the difference between resistive vs. capacitive tablets. Look for resistive tablets with finger touch capabilities. The costs of such tablets are surprisingly affordable and usually much less than the iPad. Also, and very importantly, the play Flash content including videos..
