We are delighted to invite you to “Unveiling Silence: A National Conference on Natal Family Violence”, hosted by Swayam.

 

Dates: 17–18 July, 2025

Venue: Hotel Golden Tulip, Kolkata

 

The event will mark the formal release of our insightful study, “The Natal Family: A Neglected Site of Domestic Violence Against Women – An Exploratory Study”.

 

The conference will bring together researchers, activists, practitioners, and state actors to deepen our collective understanding of, and response to, this often overlooked but urgent issue. Over the two days, the conference will feature:

• The launch and presentation of Swayam’s study on NFV — its methodology, key findings, and conceptual framing
• Panel discussions exploring the intersections of natal family violence with physical and psycho-social disability and non-normative gender and sexual identities.
• Reflections from frontline practitioners working with women and girls.

 

While domestic violence is largely viewed through the lens of the marital family, this study draws attention to the critical, under-recognised reality of violence and control that many women and girls experience within their natal families — parents, brothers, and extended kin. These harms span emotional, psychological, economic, and physical abuse, often continuing across generations and compounded by systemic silences.

 

We hope the conversations will not only amplify silenced voices, but also spark collective action to address natal family violence, ensure redress for survivors, and strengthen advocacy efforts.

 

We would be honoured by your presence and participation. The programme will commence at 2:00 PM on 17th July (with lunch served from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM) and conclude by 3:00 PM on 18th July.
