Tariq Ali Speak in Cape Town

on the geopolitical impact of the revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East

DATE: 12 April 2011

VENUE: Lecture Theatre 2A, Robert Leslie Social Sciences Building, Upper Campus, UCT

TIME: 05:30 PM

The extraordinary struggle and victory of the Tunisian and Egyptian people against dictatorship, social and economic hardship and corruption open the way for a more radical transformation in these countries as well as in the entire region. Already the peoples of Yemen, Bahrain, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Jordan, Syria and others are rocking the ruling elites through their own mobilisations and protests. Imperialism’s grip on the region is being shaken. In order to try and reverse the deteriorating balance of forces the West has seized the opportunity for military intervention in Libya. Yet, the revolutions in the Arab region show the potential for the spread of similar revolts to other regions of the world.

Tariq Ali, internationalist and well known author, political analyst and activist will explain the broader context and geopolitical significance of these revolutions and uprisings. Tariq Ali has been a leading figure of the international left since the 60’s. He is a long-standing editor of the New Left Review and a political commentator published on every

continent. His latest book is The Obama Syndrome (Verso). Ali’s other recent book Clash of Fundamentalisms with its critique of market fundamentalism provides crucial insight to the factors behind the Arab revolts.

Tariq Ali’s latest book, The Obama Syndrome (Verso), will be on sale at the meeting.

The meetings  is hosted by Alternative Information Development Centre and the Wolpe Memorial Trust.
