Gear 5 ("Gear Fifth") is the awakened form of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which strengthens the user's rubbery body. It also allows the user the ability to manipulate and transform their environment, similar to a Paramecia's awakening.[2] Luffy achieved this ability during his final battle with Kaidou on Onigashima.
In this state, Luffy's heartbeat takes on a musical rhythm which has been described by Zunesha as the "Drums of Liberation" (解放のドラム, Kaihō no Doramu?).[5] His hair and clothes (with the exception of his signature straw hat, sash, and sandals) turn white,[6] his eyes glow with red ring-like pupils (pink in the anime), and white clouds float around his neck, similar to the clouds of steam that accompany him in Gear 4. His eyebrows also become swirled and billowing. It seems Gear 5 also transforms Luffy's outfit to his pants and sandals that he usually wears as opposed to whatever else he is wearing,[7] which is not unlike the article of clothing removal for most Zoan transformations. The outfit will return upon deactivating Gear 5.[8] To activate this transformation, all Luffy seemingly has to do is force his heart to beat to the rhythm of the Drums of Liberation.[9]
As an awakened Mythical Zoan based on a God, Luffy is afforded immense strength, speed, and durability in Gear 5 that outclass the physical enhancement granted by most Zoan powers, including awakened ones. Most notably, he could fight and defeat Kaidou, an infamous Emperor feared for his nigh-unmatchable might who is further enhanced by the Mythical Devil Fruit Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, on nearly equal footing. Furthermore, his strength and speed is such that he can match and completely overpower Rob Lucci's own awakened Zoan form with immense ease.[10][11] In terms of durability, he could as well take a direct hit from Kaidou's Bolo Breath attack, only to come out of it barely hurt (despite his body appearing cartoonishly charred) and return to the fight immediately after. This also includes a faster recovery rate, which functions involuntarily, even when he is unconscious.[12] In fact, the physical feats Luffy can pull off in Gear 5 border on nearly the absurd; he can spin his legs fast enough to run through midair while generating enough friction to ignite fire in his wake,[13] and spin like a top with such force that he turns into a burrowing drill.[14]
Aligning with the Mythical Zoan nature of this form, Luffy's already rubbery body gains freedom and flexibility that surpasses what he would receive from his previous forms, to the point that it is now even cartoonishly malleable, with Kaidou likening it to "something out of a picture book". Examples of this are when he took a hit to the head from Kaidou's Hassaikai, only for his head to warp and wrap around the weapon and its spikes, and when Kaidou tried to smash him into the ground, his body was simply squished instead and later returned to its original shape.[15] This mitigates the damage dealt by attacks that would normally bypass his Devil Fruit abilities, though the impacts will still hurt.[16] Even more ridiculously, like how Gear 5 lets Luffy pull off feats in a cartoonish manner, his body is affected in all manner of funky ways when reacting to physical and emotional stimulations. For example, when Luffy got hit by Topman Warcury's Haoshoku Haki roar, most of his physical features, such as his clothes and scars, were literally blown off of him before he physically reattached them.[17]
Luffy is able to utilize both the limb inflation of Gear 3 and the muscle inflation of Gear 4 (called Muscle-Muscle Power in the anime[18]) without the need to pump air into his body first, allowing him to greatly increase his own strength. This allows him to increase his arm to such enormous size that he can grab Kaidou's transformed body and yank him up out of the Skull Dome. With his enlarged limbs and muscles, Luffy could easily manhandle Kaidou despite his enormous size, swinging him in circles and repeatedly slamming him on the ground. Luffy can also perform the inflation over his entire body at once to the point of him reaching the size of an actual giant.[19]
Unlike typical Zoan awakenings, Gear 5 has an ability of Paramecia awakenings: extending his rubbery nature to the environment around himself.[20] By making surfaces rubbery, he can cushion himself from powerful blows[21] and even bounce off or launch himself off of whatever surface his power affects.[22] He can also stretch surfaces to bounce attacks back at his opponent. Interestingly, the altered terrain is seemingly more resilient than normal; a piece of the Skull Dome's roof was neither burnt nor melted while reflecting a Bolo Breath attack, which is scorching hot and has enough explosive power to destroy a whole castle and mountain top.[23] Luffy has even applied this effect to intangible matter, such as lightning and clouds,[24][25] as well as to organic material.[26][27] Although Luffy's punches cause his opponents' bodies to stretch around his fists, they still transfer the force of the attacks.[28][22][29]
Aside from his rubber-related abilities, Gear 5 allows Luffy to use the Gomu Gomu no Mi's true power, which is bringing forth whatever the user can imagine into reality. Luffy has utilized this ability to materialize objects from various resources, such as creating goggles from his flaming hair[22] and constructing a baseball bat and helmet from a tree.[30]
Despite the strength of this form, due to inexperience, it consumes plenty of energy for Luffy to maintain and use, even to the point that he can appear to have visibly aged decades once de-transformed in addition to experiencing extensive exhaustion and fatigue, although these effects will eventually wear off on their own after a while.[31] In the anime, this is further emphasized with Luffy's colors becoming muted.[9] That said, Luffy can fully restore his vitality and stamina right after using Gear 5 by eating excessive amounts of food.[32] In addition, Luffy is still vulnerable to cutting attacks.[33]
Techniques that are variations of Luffy's regular attacks tend to gain the label "Dawn" (白いドーン, Dōn?, literally meaning "White") after the "Gomu Gomu no" prefix in this form, for example Gomu Gomu no Dawn Rocket. The known named techniques that are used by Luffy so far in this form are as follows:
Yes, but what is Embellished? I never even heard the word before, even less seen any explanations to why and how it actually works ingame.
What is the point of having an evolved profession system if it can only take you two items on the way? It is insulting to the system itself, and even more insulting to the players that keep on losing money due to this system.
Max 2: Noticed this when I made my third embellished item. Lost around 70k on that.
Made my 4th. With another embellisment to upgrade my 2nd item slot.
Cant have different embellishments. Like wtf? Lost another 70k on that.
I also got messed up by this system because I had not noticed that Elemental Lariat counted as Embelished.
I had assumed that embellishments were things you add in a craftable and not any unique effect a gear piece may have.
So I became a patron of Griftah and asked nicely the one who made my bracers to recraft them with Griftah powder
When Luffy first started using Gear Second, it was claimed that this was shortening his lifespan as it requires his body to work more than it normally does. Is this not the case anymore? And if not, why? What changed?
Luffy has been using Gear Second in many fights now and there does not seem to be that worry anymore. Or is this something that will be addressed later in the story?
When Luffy first developed his 2nd Gear, he would pump blood through out the entirety of his body and increase the blood flow, doing so enabled his tissue and organs to access more oxygen and nutrients, hence making him match up with opponents who were stronger than him. The problem however occurred with prolonged use of the technique, due to the fast rate of metabolism from increased blood flow, luffy would burn up nutrients rapidly, and the less nutrients he had, the less energy he had to continue fighting, but since he's stubborn, he'd still continue using it, and at that point the technique hacks away at his life force because his body is being overworked with little nutrients.
Moreover, during the 2 year time skip, luffy trained under Reilegh, and was able to fully master and perfect his 2nd gear, to the point where he only needed to pump blood increasingly through the parts he needed to use for fighting. Although this helped reduced the effects, I believe the 2nd gear becomes more dangerous when he uses it past its limits.
So to finally answer your question, the second gear still negatively affects luffy and chips away at his lifespan, but when compared to the time he first developed the technique, the effects are not that great. The main technique that poses more of a threat to luffy is his fourth gear, which is a completely different case.
Gear is the combined form of headgear, clothing, and shoes that Inklings and Octolings can wear. Gear comes with various abilities that provide effects for the player in battle. Gear can be acquired in shops, through SplatNet 3, or through amiibo, ordered through Spyke or Murch, or by other means, depending on the item.
Each piece of gear has a brand and a star power that affects its abilities. Most brands have an increased likelihood of rolling a particular ability when a slot is unlocked, as well as a decreased likelihood of a different ability. Its stars affects how many ability slots a piece of gear has by default and the amount of experience required to unlock those slots.
The primary source for gear is in shops. Shops include Booyah Base in Splatoon and the Galleria in Splatoon 2, both of which contain stores for headgear, clothing, and shoes. Items purchased from shops will always have their default main ability and a default number of ability slots, but shops offer the lowest prices on gear items.
