Theluxury watch world operates much like it did 100 years ago. The watchmaker builds a watch sells it to a distributor with a markup. The distributor doubles the price, and sells it on to a retail store. The retail store doubles the price again, and passes on this price to the customer.
Outsiders simplifies things: We produce the watch and then sell it directly to the customer. No middleman, and all of savings passed directly on to the person actually wearing the watch.
Today, we are going to veer off the normal review path a little. I am sure many know that Baselworld is almost over at the time of publication and Outsiders Watches apparently made a spectacle at the watch fair, or so they have said. Their first watch, the Outsiders Revolution diver is a $500 Swiss Made Submariner style homage and there is a lot to delve into when it comes to this brand and its marketing tactics. Now, let me get this out of the way. Business, in general, is hard and this price point in the watch world is a very competitive game and you need all the edge you can get. There is nothing wrong with that, but the issue is usually the product does not live up to the hype. I will comment at the end of this review if I think it does, in fact, live up to the hype or not, but l am going to lay out some of their most recent events that happen to coincide with the timing of this review.
If you read and watch our reviews here at Watchreport frequently (and hopefully are subscribed to our Youtube channel), you know that most of the time the video is recorded before the written article is done. This is done for many reasons, but mostly just how it is organized with the volume of watches that come in for review and how we have set it up. Normally, that does not matter, but in this case, in the time between the video and today, the brand appeared at Baselworld. Posts on their Instagram feed showed that they were handing out free watches to Baselworld attendees and I even saw a member of one of the Facebook watch groups post that he was one of the recipients. They legit were giving away their watches. I do not how many they allotted to give way, but I imagine a decent amount of people were game for it if nothing else than just sheer curiosity. It put some eyes on the Outsider Revolution.
Well, apparently, someone at Baselworld did not like this and called the police to escort the team out of the building and out of Baselworld. Now, I was not at Basel, so I am not sure how much of this is true and how much of this is over-the-top marketing. I have not reached out to the brand for clarification and have not really seen anyone else posting about it online, save for the one individual who said he got a free watch. Giving out free watches at a massive fair such as Baselworld when you are a new brand is not such a bad idea at all. You have the press there, watch journalists, watch enthusiasts, etc. That is not bad marketing at all. How true it is that they were thrown out of the building? I am not sure. Maybe more will come out about this in the following days.
So who are the guys behind the Outsiders brand? I am not sure, but I guess some of the attendees at Baselworld found out recently. Are they starting a revolution? Are they upsetting the watch industry? No. No, they are not. Are they making a nice watch at an affordable price? Yes. I know that might not be the catchiest slogan, but it is grounded in truth. Checking their website currently, it seems that you can get the Revolution for 20% off using the code BaselPolice at checkout. Looks like they will ride that one as long as they can. That would bring the price down much closer to the $400 mark, making it a nice option for someone wanting a solid ETA-based dive watch.
I think the company would do well to use a standard width lug spacing, say 20 or 22mm which would make the watch more attractive to a lot of people and it should not be terribly troublesome to change manufacture of the end links. As a bonus they could even use the easy change pins!
I think this review was a waste. Evans is much more clear about his pre-conceived bias toward micro brands than he is at all about the actual watch. The review comes across as pretentious and I still know little about the actual watch.
LOL. You should read the countless reviews on this site of microbrands my friend. I have the furthest thing from a Bias towards microbrands. In fact, I am wearing a $400 micro on my wrist as I type this, from Maranez.
The reason this article is the way it is is that I wanted to go more in-depth to the issue the brand had at the time and I covered the review of the watch itself in the video. I did this as to not make the video so long going on about the Basel stuff and the review of the watch, so I split it up.
Led by director Danya Taymor, and set in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Outsiders follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their chosen family of "outsiders," who are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. The musical opened on Broadway April 11 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
For their first Monday morning performance, the full Greaser company got in on the action, performing "Grease Got a Hold". But before jumping straight into the athletic action, three of the show's Tony nominees came forward to share what the show has meant to them.
The Outsiders received 12 Tony nominations, including nods for Brody Grant, Sky Lakota-Lynch, and Joshua Boone. "It was surreal!," shared Lakota-Lynch when asked about nomination day. "I couldn't believe it. I reread the list like six times, because Steven Skybell is on there too, and I was like 'Is it the right Sky?' But it was the right Sky!"
The Broadway cast stars Grant as Ponyboy, Brent Comer as Darrel, Jason Schmidt as Sodapop, Lakota-Lynch (Dear Evan Hansen) as Johnny, Boone (Skeleton Crew) as Dallas Winston, Emma Pittman (Chicago) as Cherry Valance, Daryl Tofa (Back to the Future) as Two-Bit Mathews, Kevin William Paul as Bob Sheldon, and Dan Berry as Paul.
The ensemble features Barton Cowperthwaite, Tilly Evans-Krueger, RJ Higton, Wonza Johnson, Sean Harrison Jones, Renni Anthony Magee, Sarahgrace Mariani, Melody Rose, Josh Strobl, and Trevor Wayne. Jordan Chin, Milena J. Comeau, Henry Julin Gendron, and Victor Carrillo Tracey round out the company as swings.
The song, which sees eldest brother Darrel struggle under the strain of supporting their family following the death of their parents, is one of the highlights of the score by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine. The musical also features a book by Adam Rapp and Levine.
In Jolie's interview, she shared that it was the story's probing teenage spirit that drew her to support the production, stating that "it was written by a 16-year old girl! And she wrote a wonderful article around that time called Teenagers are Real, and she was saying that to say that 'we deal with real things. We deal with real life things as we are coming into our own, and we are facing the real world.'
"I think that now, with so much happening, there is a lot of discussion that needs to be had, and questions that need to be answered. And with this [show], there's a lot that asks the hard questions, while also focusing on finding your true self and your true voice. Trusting yourself and finding your family, fighting for something to believe in... there's a reason that this novel has been around for so long, and I am so proud of this particular group of artists who created this. I think it is very special."

I moved to Texas when I was in junior high. Even before I moved to this state I knew the love that Texas had for the Dallas Cowboys. They are America's team. So what happened when we went to watch a game at a restaurant in Dallas didn't really surprise me. It did surprise others.
So it was Christmas Eve and the Cowboys were playing. We decided to go to Boomer Jacks to watch some football. Silly me thought the group I was with wanted to watch the Cowboys game. I mean who else is there?
Apparently, there was another game going on that my family wanted to see. So the Chicago Bears were also playing the Phoenix Cardinals, at the same time. My family who lives in Phoenix and once lived in Chicago wanted to see that game. They didn't understand where they were.
They argued with me that when they are in Phoenix or Chicago they can go to any sports bar and see any game they want. They did not expect to see every single TV again on the Dallas Cowboys game. I tried to explain that Dallas fans are not like other sports fans. They really are not.
Across the street from where we were watching football on Christmas Eve is a Raising Canes. OK, nothing too crazy about that except that this Raising Canes was just transformed into a Dallas Cowboys Raising Canes.
So what happened when we walked in and part of my group wanted to watch a different game? Well, Dallas fans are something else that is for sure but they are also hospitable. So not too surprising that they did show their grace and Southern ways. They put one TV near our table on the Chicago/Phoenix game.
