Good effort in summing up details, my congratulations on maintaining
the group activities. While it was nice seeing many teachers full name
after so long, I felt sad on seeing many names marked posthumous,
specially Mr R S Mehta – Mathematics; Mr S P Aggarwal – English; Mr P
N Mehra – Physics; and Mrs M Shenoy – Social Studies (she taught us
Kannada then, the second language optional to Sanskrit), who we
remember to this day.

The list seems to miss a few names:
1. H.Gururaja Rao, possibly the first Head Master, now no more.
2. Mrs.Asha Taneja, she taught English during 7th-8th Std,. Her sister
Renu was our classmate.
3. Last but not the least, Mr.Balan, who ran the canteen during early
70s! Not sure if he continued later, and is still around!

'will do the needful on membership subscription mentioned,
Mohan

Hi all,

Yes, it is sad to see the word 'Posthumous' against familiar names...

Mrs. Maya Shenoy - passed away of old age. She was based out of Mangalore and had a beautiful hill top villa - used to visit her often - I am sure the breeze there still reflects the gentle nature that she had...

Mr. S.P. Agarwal - was unfortunate to have Throat Cancer, which ultimately made the final way for him.

Mr. R.S. Mehta ('who used to address his students as "Bettonji' - I can almost still imagine him calling out, his head tilted down - but eyes peeping out over his glasses..) passed away of old age.

Not sure about others....and yes, I also often remember Balan and his canteen... anybody has any updates on him ?.... still remember, the whole canteen used to reek (yes, reek !) of sambhar smell.... Rs. 2/- for a Malasa dosa.....inflation sure has made its hike !

Best Regards,
Sudhir

Hi,

Thanks for refreshing my memory. Mehta Sir, Aggarwal sir (who made
sure none of us ever forget the difference between little, a little
and the little), Balan and his Sambar (I used to get it for 10 ps in
'75), Mrs. Pradhan who taught us perfect Hindi (and who would have
probably smacked all the current RJ's for the terrible hindi)....Who
was the drawing teacher? Can't recall his name but he was a wonderful
dancer as well. I remember he stole the show in one of the annual day
functions when he out danced kids twenty years younger.

Ha ha ... 10Ps !! Inflation sure was high even back then ! He used to charge us 50 Ps for Sambhar during my time (mid Eighties).

The drawing teacher you are referring to, perhaps, is KV Subbanna. He is still with DKS.... lost most of his (beautiful !) curly hair though!!

Best Regards,
Sudhir

Sudhir, not sure if the drawing teacher Anand referred to is Rana Singh, though I don't know if he also danced. Also nice to know that he remembers variations of the word "little" made clear by SP Aggarwal which curiously I too had included in the below soon after your reply, but delayed to allow space for others; and since none came through for a very long time, never posted it.
Mr.Rana had promised Rs.25 to everyone who obtained a distinction in Mech.Drawing, and true to his word sent a Money Order. It was nice talking to him through Vineet Bhalla, Secretary on the Teachers Day over phone, and I was expecting a few photographs of the event from the organizers.

------ Old Wine -------
I had overlooked the first two names below under the passed away list, and remembering them briefly with others:

Mr V P Sharma – Physical Education
Who can forget him, rather the short and thick Danda that accompanied him proudly, and smacked many an open palm? He was sportive, humorous, played Volley ball with us in the court opposite the stage (some times joined by Mr.Goel), and Table Tennis in the lobby near the stairs. Always in white, as demanded by the job, well-built with an eternal, narrow Tika on the forehead, he commanded the students well, and was best suited to his post.

Mr K S Kochar – Librarian
The library was always the quietest place (in contrast with the canteen right below), with not a soul around except for the smart and well-dressed Mr.Kochar in his pleated & fashionable Pagdi.

Mrs M Shenoy – Social Studies
Forgot adding that her daughter Kanaka was our classmate.

Mr P N Mehra – Physics
The class was in full swing, and a junior student barged in with the message, Sir Aapko Bunty Sir Ne Bulaya Hai. The teacher turned around and asked confusedly, Yeh Bunty Sir Kaun Hai Bhayee? The whole class burst out with laughter!
Mr. Mehra taught Physics well, and was also a bit strict in his own way. The lab sessions were particularly interesting with all those fork & pendulum experiments. He also taught us Statistics when it first got introduced. The sight of him on the scooter, with his Lab assistant on the pillion carefully balancing lab equipments are among the many things I still remember.

Mr S P Aggarwal – English
He inspired us to take interest in all aspects of the language. We always looked forward to his classes, specially the afternoon sessions of Oliver Twist which he seemed to know by heart, and made the characters come alive through narration.
"The three usages of the word Few: Few, A Few and The Few" that he taught can never be forgotten, especially in these days of bad English largely over the Net & Texting, where just "Few" or "Little" is applied for all situations, some times even in Newspapers.
Most of our Higher Secondary classes were held in the mini-auditorium or the lecture hall above the library, and he patiently assisted the whole class in filling forms for the final year exams. He was highly critical when needed that let us improvize and learn our mistakes. Though appeared stern, he was jovial and helpful, even occassionaly joined our Volley ball sessions. If I recall, he was also in charge of sports additionally.

H.Gururaja Rao was The Principal, and not the Head Master as I mentioned.

Not sure if Balan should be brought up under this premise of those postively no more. Let's cover him up next (we owe him one for all those Bread Pakoras costing 15ps then), and hope that he is not just alive & kicking, but also related to Vidya Balan!

Guys, It was Mr. Rana Singh and what a character. And he sure was a great dancer.

About Mr. Aggarwal, his English teaching skills were phenomenal. I came to DKS in 7th standard from a succession of Marathi and Hindi medium schools. In my previous school in 6th, we had just been taught the English alphabet and I had no clue to spoken or written English. He not only managed to teach me English but did so within a year. I never had any trouble following any teacher from 8th onwards.

I think he was generally a very well read man. We had "A Tale of Two Cities" in 11th. Rather heavy stuff for 16 year olds but he made it very interesting. I will be eternally grateful to him for what he taught me.

Best wishes to everyone for the festive season.

Anand
