Snow Descends on the Grasberg

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) employees working at Grasberg were surprised on Wednesday (4/01) by a very unique and rare phenomenon, the falling of snow covering nearly the entire area of the surface mine.

In a tropical region like Indonesia, the falling of snow - an ordinary event in countries with four seasons - is an extremely rare phenomenon. The Grasberg area in the highlands of Papua is most likely the only region in Indonesia with snowfall. Records indicate that the falling of snow has also occurred on August 12, 2003 and October 10, 2007.
