THIS WEEK
1) Shabbat Morning Minyan, December 12th, 10:00 am + Community Lunch
in Honor of Baby Noemi Trey
Altshul will meet Shabbat morning, December 12th, in the Social Hall
at Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place, Brooklyn, NY
11215. Kindershul will start at the beginning of the torah service.
Services will be followed by a luncheon, open to the community,
sponsored by Jeff and Jessica Trey in honor of the naming of their
daughter, Noemi.
2) Two Hannukah Parties with the Altshul Community!
Altshul is organizing two Hanukkah celebrations:
Altshul Family Hannukah Celebration
The Altshul family-oriented Hannukah party will be this Sunday,
December 13th from 3 to 5 at CBE in the rotunda (where Friday night
services are held.) Please bring your favorite Hannukah food to share
with the group. We will provide condiments for latkes and beverages.
We will be singing Hanukkah songs so if you play the guitar and would
like to at the party, go ahead and bring it. Finally, we will be
lighting candles during the party so if you want to bring your menorah
and candles, again please do so. We have a few other fun activities
planned. Hope to see you all there. And Altshul food rules apply:
food must be prepared in a kosher or strictly vegetarian kitchen.
Hannukah Open Mic
On Thursday, December 17th, we will be holding a Hannukah party and
acoustic open mic! If you would like to sing, recite poetry, display
artwork or photography, perform stand-up, tell a story, or share your
talent in any kind of way, please be in touch with Melissa,

5) Participation Survey
If you have not done so already, please take a moment to fill out
Altshul’s annual participation survey. The survey contains an
opportunity to have your information included in the Altshul community
directory and to let us know how you would like to contribute to
Altshul in the coming year. There is no need to fill out the survey
if you filled out a paper copy at one of the community meetings. Here

6) Implementation of Altshul Kids Policy:
In the spirit of the Altshul Kids Policy, developed by the steering
committee and announced at this year's community meetings and at our
November 14th davening, Altshul is adopting a few new practices. They
are:
1) A section of the room in which we daven is set aside for families
with children. When we meet in the Rabbi's office, that section is the
back two rows; in the chapel, it is the front of the room.
2) There are a few portions of the service when children are invited
to take a central role:
-- Children are invited to follow the torah as it is carried around
the room at the beginning of the torah service. Kindershul will begin
after the torah has been taken out.
-- Children are invited to help lead Adon Olam; parents are welcome to
join their children. In order to facilitate kids' ability to take on
this role, we'll be using the same tune for Adon Olam each week.
We hope that these small changes will help us to grow as a community
that meets the needs of all our members. Everyone is encouraged to be
a part of the ongoing conversation about kids at Altshul; please
contact members of the shamash team and / or the steering committee if
you have ideas, concerns, or questions.

7. Two Hannukah Parties with CBE
Saturday, December 12th
5pm: ECC Tots and Shir l'shabbat Hanukah Hooplah with Debbie Brukman
in the Social Hall
5:45pm: Community Havdalah and Candle Lighting in the Social Hall
6:00pm: Congregation Beth Elohim Hanukah Party in the Ballroom. There
will be music! Fresh latkes! Games! Social Action Projects!
Prizes and a light supper will be served.
Pre-purchased tickets are required to attend this portion of the
evening. Tickets to cover the cost of the event are $10 per adult, $5
per child or $25 per family and are available for purchase on our
website and at the Temple office.
One more way to celebrate Hanukah is to engage in community learning.
Please join us in the Chapel for sessions beginning at 5pm and 7pm.
What you can bring:
*Homemade applesauce for a CBE taste-off
**Please bring a wrapped or unwrapped toy or game to the Hanukah Party
for the Family Resource Center Toy Drive at JCCA Mental Health and
Preventive Services here in Brooklyn. The Center is requesting toys
and games, such as UNO, Connect 4, Trouble etc. for children age 6 and
up that can be shared with a family. The gifts will be given to
children by their own parents. If you wrap the gift please use
ecumenical holiday wrapping paper and please label it with a post-it
as to age range and gender (if relevant).
Friday, December 18th
The entire CBE community is invited to a Hanukah Family Shabbat
Service on Friday, December 18th at 7pm in the Chapel. This is an
evening filled with Hanukah joy and song, featuring live music from
our Shabbat Musika band and a sing-a-long of our favorite Hanukah
songs. A festive oneg with lots of latkes and jelly doughnuts will
follow services, with time to sit and catch up with your friends and
share the holiday cheer. No RSVP necessary; this event is free and
open to the entire congregation. Please join us as we continue the
celebration through these 8 special nights! The Hanukah Singalong is
co-sponsored by Yachad and the Kehillah Project, a new initiative at
CBE.

8) Culture in the Cucina: How Rome's Jews are Cooking up the Past and
Future
While Jews have lived in Italy since the 2nd century BCE ,"Italian
Jewish cuisine" is difficult to define. Still, a handful of
traditional dishes - like Carciofi alla Guidia (deep fried artichokes)
and Pizza Ebraica (a fruit cake-like dessert) - have managed to
endure.
Food writer [and Altshuler!] Leah Koenig, will discuss how certain
traditional recipes have attained iconic status in Rome. *Bonus!
Italian Jewish Chanukah recipes and information about where to find
Roman Jewish food in NYC.
