iGoogle tabs on the left... It SUCKS bigtime! : ((

But, for future reference... Change your home address too:
http://www.google.com/ig?hl=all , and all your iGoogle tabs are above
and beyond again : )

The old solution does not work anymore, for the Dutch language
starting august 26 2009. Old URL was: http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all
(?hl changed to ?gl...:|).

Thanks too: http://front.stuffonline.nl/archives/373 and

Have fun and Peace!

The new solution has one disadvantage for non-English users... A lot
of the blue Google links are in English. This should be fixed by
Google, but one thing you already can do is changing the .com url to
your specific country code. It does not fix anything yet, but just to
be save... :)

So Dutch would change http://www.google.com/ig?hl=all, to
http://www.google.nl/ig?hl=all. For German change google.com to
google.de and so forth...

Peace!

For non-english users (including dutch Nederlands) I found the
following solution: change your home address for iGoogle too:

http://www.google.ie/ig?hl=nl OR
http://www.google.ca/ig?hl=nl

and you will have tabs on top AND search in your native language...

Peace!

How to remove the iGoogle sidebar

by Tony, at 3:03 pm

RAGE : Random | permalink | rss

UPDATE 6/3/09: Well the time has came and google fixed the ig?gl=all
workaround. http://www.google.com/ig?hl=all is similar to the ig?
gl=all trick but I would imagine it’s days are numbered as well, and
your best bet would be a firefox or greasemonkey script.

EDIT: You can still do all the stuff I mentioned below, but if you are
extra lazy and just want a single Firefox extension to kill the
sidebar, I made this for you:
Sidebar Collapser

So if you are a Firefox user like me (and I hope you are), and hate
the new iGoogle tabs on the left (and I hope you do), then I think
I’ve found the best solution to rid yourself of them.
First, you will need to install a Firefox extension called
Greasemonkey available for download here:
Greasemonkey

Then after that is installed install this greasemonkey script
available from here:
iGoogle Sidebar Collapse

This is my version of Rocketmaster script. I changed the side tab
collapse arrow to match the green of the Tea House iGoogle theme I
use. I also set it to work on more addresses than Rocketmaster’s
version. If you want to change the color of the arrow that gets rid of
the side tab then once the script is installed, go to Tools;
Greasemonkey; Manage User Scripts; Select the iGoogle Sidebar
Collapse; and select Edit. Find this block of code:

#iGoogleSidebarSwitchButton.closed {
border-left-style: solid;
-moz-border-left-colors: transparent green;
}
#iGoogleSidebarSwitchButton.opened {
border-right-style: solid;
-moz-border-right-colors: transparent green;

Transparent green is the color, change both instances to what ever
color suits you
Hope this helps!

If you have the adblock extension for Firefox, you should be able to
completely kill the whole left sidebar with this filter:

google.com#TD(class=leftborder)

I’m trying to cobble together a Greasemonkey script that will sort of
hobble tabs back up top for the people who only really use one tab.
Check back later for that.

The only problem with this approach is that Google won’t change its
tactics or address the problems if we keep using iGoogle as is. They
will see that the change hasn’t stopped anyone from using the page,
and simply ignore the complaints..

I agree. Though if they really care about the metrics they can embed a
tracker in the left frame and see how many people are actually loading
it. Personally I think that they really don’t care what the people
think and are going to keep the new version regardless of what the
user base wants. Part of their grander scheme I guess.

[...] For the finishing touch, let’s free up some screen real-estate
by getting rid of the nasty left-hand tabs that take up so much width.
This only works in Firefox, so you’ll have to get that first. Then,
you’ll need to install the Greasemonkey add-on. This will enable your
browser to read the iGoogle Sidebar Collapse script, which you can get
here. For further instructions on this method, see here. [...]

It works great! Thank you! Thank you!!
Now, if you can set a “go up” for the bottom of some of my LONGGGG
pages!! My second dream request!!

Evil Sidebar is back! Google has disabled the URL – your extension did
the trick though, thanks so much!

I just noticed that, http://www.google.com/ig?hl=all works but kind of
gimps the top links.

Im not sure why try to keep pushing it on us. Last thing i want is to
be accessible to chat every time i log on. I suppose the days of
workarounds are numbered. Which means my days of using igoogle are
numbered.

Thanks very much for the new instructions. They worked perfectly — I
even changed the color of the arrow!

http://www.google.com/ig?hl=all&t=2
still works

June 9, 2009 @ 8:20 am, by Aaron
you can also use http://www.google.ca/ig?hl=en to have your top links
working

Hi there, thanks for the links! If you ever get a chance, could you
see if your extension could be tweaked to work in SeaMonkey? For
various reasons I use that over Firefox but I think it’s pretty
similar. I despise those stupid side tabs. The whole thing is really
annoying, especially on a small laptop screen.

July 15, 2009 @ 7:53 pm, by brian
the adblock filter did the trick for me!

July 15, 2009 @ 8:52 pm, by Gerry
Yes this is annoying. I found that changing my google to the Irish
site http://www.google.ie/ig?hl=en works. I do wish that google would
see sense though!

July 16, 2009 @ 1:17 am, by nicodem
Yes adblock worked for me too, but with 2 rules, depending on which
google I go …
google.com#TD(class=leftborder)
google.fr#TD(class=leftborder)
Think about you localized google …

This works better than Rockmaster’s original – a cleaner, more elegant
solution. Many thanks!

Thanks, thanks, thanks!!! No more sidebar!!!!

Too bad the basic solutions give english search results.
I already had tested (for Dutch) if http://www.google.com/ig?hl=nl or
http://www.google.nl/ig?hl=nl would fix the problem, and still leave
the tabs on top. But it didn’t : (
Then I tried, inspired by this page, http://www.google.ca/ig?hl=nl
and to my happy surprise – it works (for now…). Also, google.ie/ig?
hl=nl works… Until Canada and Ireland are “updated” by Google too (NL
domain did last week).
So thanx and peace to all people who HATE google sidebar on the left!!
Grmbl.

he man goede tip! http://www.google.ie/ig?hl=nl werkt prima!

Alle blauwe teksten in het nederlands en mijn igoogle tab-bladen
zitten weer gewoon bovenaan. Waar het hoort.

dankje!
