I have been really interested in F# recently and have been reading a lot of books and articles. So far, by far the best book I've come across is "F# For Scientists." I am not a scientist myself but this book has a great treatment of the core concepts of functional programming and algorithms, which I am finding is changing the way I think about programs.

I'd really like to talk with others about this stuff and think I'd get a better understanding. Is anyone else interested? I will carry this book with me at all times for the next several months I am sure, so if you want to take a look at the book I'll be at the next #altnetseattle meeting.

If anyone else is interested, please reply and we can see about where/when/etc.

Chris, I've got two friends in two different states who would like to
attend.

Would you be interested in trying to hold the book club virtually (ie.
Skype or the like)?

Hey, I'm in Portland and am interested in this idea! I saw the intro
to F# talk at PDC and picked up the Expert F# book when I got back.

Very cool but a bit mind-bending. :-)

I started a user group for it here in case anyone else wants to join
that I left out:

Sounds like this is going to become a skype in book club, so you should be able to do it, Larry. We are considering 7pm Mondays PST as the time to do it. We'll announce to the big-mega-uber-altnet list later, but if you've got any feedback on that, let us know. Thanks!

I would be very interested in starting a users group with someone.
Would anyone else be interested in a Seattle F# Users Group?

I would be. Another option is to have a continual session at the monthly
alt.net meetings. We have plenty of room....

I think Glenn has a good idea. It's hard enough to make time for all these things. One Saturday a month and I get my fill of good programmer conversations. If there is enough interest we could end up naturally talking about f# all day. Open Spaces Technology is cool like that.

The f# book club thing only works now because we don't have to physically leave home (but my wife is starting to realize the obvious - that I am _mentally_ not home!) Gang programming with Shared View and Skype has been a pleasant surprise too - I didn't expect it would work as well as it does. You should come hang out with us Jan. 5th when we resume meeting. But making time for another user group might be hard for the f# fans I know.

I'd also like to note that there is a long standing functional programming group in Seattle. I have been a lurker on their list for a long time but have never gotten a chance to attend one of their meetings. I think most of what I want to learn about f# is the same things those guys are talking about. I think they said they had Chris Smith show up a while back, if I remember correctly. It might be really cool to link up with that group.
