It could be, but I know a song that is a much better fit (the lyrics
almost match).
Keep guessing.

(hint: I reposted this to rec.arts.tv - the original song was a network
jingle from the 80s)

Also reposted to altnet.general so some other people can have a stab at
it (I do not agree or disagree with the opnions of the poster).

Hello Helm, Steve and Dissatisfied Altopia Customer!

I haven't been an Altopia customer for many, many years, but I found
Chris Caputo's service entirely satisfactory in the far-off days of
the early 2000s. So did many net.friends of mine who used his service.

Chris could be trusted to ignore the whining of NetCops in the days
when NetCopping was a serious problem. He deserves much praise for
that.

Anybody who moans about Altopia's retention is missing the point of
what Altopia was (and presumably still is) all about, which is freedom
of speech.

Anyway, thanks to you all for the trip down memory lane.

Well you can get free speech on any server these days. UsenetExpress
(the one refreneced in the poem) has way more retention, is cheaper (if
you get it during a sale), and could care less about what you say on a
text newsgroup.

So for free speech in 2020, Altopia is no longer the only option and it
looks like there are better options, but I have not really tried their
service so I would not know. The only thing I really don't like is the
2 connections rule - i pay for newsgroupdirect and get like 100
connections - thats 50 times the connections!

Good to see your perspective however. Nice to learn more about Usenet history!

They say that cockroaches will be among the last lifeforms left on
Earth. Similarly, it seems that Cecil Neal Warren is among the last
lifeforms left on Usenet.

For many years, I got the retention I needed from my ISP, which gave
me Giganews access for no extra charge, but then they dropped Usenet.
For a while I paid for Giganews, but then I decided that I didn't
really care about proving who said what about whom ten years ago.

I'm happy to make do with individual.net now. They have some
aggressive filtering, but it's the same kind of filtering I'd do in my
own scorefile if they didn't do it for me.

I think free speech is tolerated on all servers nowadays because
nobody's complaining. In olden times, when there were lots of
complaints - not to mention threats of lawsuits against news admins -
Chris Caputo was fanatically devoted to his users' rights, which is
why some of us regard him with affection.

That never made a difference to me, because I didn't want binaries.

After twenty years, I'm still a newbie.
