UTX is most similar to Vector although it does contain some landclass, particularly for improving the definition of urban areas. OpenLC should not conflict with UTX, although you may lose some of the landclass included in UTX, but otherwise you can continue using it for vector data.

In a word, if you're going Orbx, you'll want to give up UTX. I did. UTX is vector and landclass. Orbx vector is better because it covers the entire world. Orbx landclass Open LC is better because it looks nicer. Orbx global essentially is land textures for the whole world. Kinda like all GEX regions put together.

The UTX data is more detailed and shows every road while vector shows only more important roads. As the Landclass has roads on it this works OK. If you install Vector and UTX in the default locations UTX will overwrite vector in the areas where it exists. The Road and water data are close but not identical (They are from different sources). If you are using Orbx Landclass I would turn off the UTX landclass files as Orbx has modified some of the landclasses and added some new ones. Either one is much better than the default. If you have Orbx regions they will overwrite the UTX vector data and match very well at the boundaries (as does Vector)

Is anyone using Scenery Tech North American Landclass? If so, does it improve upon FSX default, upgraded with Ultimate Terrain X? And if it does, which is given priority in the Scenery Library, the Scenery Tech product or Ultimate Terrain? It is my understanding that Ultimate Terrain landclass only affects some urban areas, so the Scenery Tech product could help out other areas. This being true leaves a question about which product does a better job in the urban areas covered by both.

In ONE case none of the payware is as good as original Microsoft. This is Downtown Pittsburgh, PA. Only Microsoft has correct landclass. Granted this is one example but it is not the only one I found. Both Cloud9 and Scenery Tech probably used the same database. The difference is the quality of the manual adjustments. This single example shows that it is really up to the user of FSX to make their own adjustments to any of these products. For that task I use Sbuilder 313. There may be others. Looking at larger USA cities showed fairly accurate textures. Rural areas seemed to suffer from farmland sometimes being classified as towns. I believe the base data is a color coded map that the vendor scans with homemade software to create the FSX files. The decision as to what color represents which landclass texture is thus chosen by the vendor. Obviously the "garbage in - garbage out" applies to the base data.I added Ultimate Terrain USA to show that it also has the city area wrong. In all cases I had only one product enabled in the Scenery Manager except that the basic Microsoft file was always enabled and superseded by the payware products in each case.Microsoft shows correct downtown. Others pretty much the same.

Very nice. Utx for Urban makes a big difference and having maximum buildings adds the final touch.I noticed that your grass at the Point (stadium addon) has more detail than I do. I have the Land Detail Textures on but the grass is mostly a blur.

In addition to standard fixes to the landclass based on user feedback, the urban data has been upscaled to be on par with the very accurate data found in the North America Landclass product, ensuring that every town on the continent bigger than 1 square kilometer will be visible.

It depends on what type of flying you are planning to do and where you are planning to do it. As you are UK based I guess you might be doing lot of your flying either within the UK or to or from the UK. In summary you basically have 3 options in terms of general scenery enhancement - Ultimate Terrain X + GEX combination, Orbx scenery or photoreal scenery. Ultimate Terrain X combined with GEX is a very good and reasonably priced combination which will give you great looking scenery to fly over throughout all of Europe though it will be generic so perhaps not the most accurate in some areas. The Orbx scenery areas for the UK are a bit more realistic in terms of looking like the sort of landscape you would expect to see when flying over the UK but when you add up the cost of the various Orbx addons you will need it is a more expensive option. The third option is to use photoreal scenery which, as it is based on real world photography, will be the most accurate in terms of what you are looking at. Photoreal however used to have the disadvantage of looking very flat and featureless below about 1500ft when I last used it in FS9 but it looks like the photoreal scenery available for FSX may well have been improved by the addition of autogen etc, but as I haven't any personal experience of using it in FSX, I can't really advise you on this.

If you want to improve your airports, there is a vast amount of software available for the UK and I can highly recommend the very detailed UKXtreme series, produced by UK2000, which now cover most of the airports in the UK. UK2000 also produce 3 volumes of VFR Airfields each of which contain about 80 UK airports (including the major ones) and airfields which is quite a good way to populate the UK with lots of improved airport scenery at a reasonable cost. The airports in these packages however are not as detailed as the UKXtreme airports but are still pretty good. If you want Scottish airfields there is also a package available from Scotflight Scenery containing about 50 airfields. In addition there are quite a number of individual UK airports produced by other developers including some very detailed ones by Orbx and the bottom line is that the UK is very well covered for addon airports and airfields.

A payware that makes everything in between airports look great, and is a lot less expensive then the payware mentioned by the others is scenerytech. 6 reasonably priced areas that if all bought will together cover the whole world.

If I am right which I am not sure I am GEX improvese the textures of the ground and Ultimate Terrain X Improves landclass like mountains etc. I heard that having them both together though is really good.

Hello fellow simmers,
UTX is for "landclass", GEXn is for "textures".
I have been using both and they are "great" together.
Go to and read the threads - a wealth of information. One fellow, NickN, is one of the sharpest simmers I've ever seen on the "overall" use / tweaking / hardware tweaking. I have learned so much and my simming experience has become just phenomenal.

Just like FSX & Acceleration aren't for everyone, that's why we have choices - and for you, UTX is not a viable add-on, so you don't use it - however, when combined with other texture / landclass programs, the end result can be very satisfying.
