In order to diagnose the problem presented by the object-in-treatment we conservators predict its past (retrodiction). With supporting documentation we imagine the history of the received object and design a treatment that allows us to imagine that object in a stable future.
Our benchwork then, that which we perform with our hands, lies at the double-colon of an analogy about our imaginations.
