Hello,

I am doing a new install of the Client Server version 9. The main
machine works fine it can connect to the database no problem. This is
expected considering that it is on that machine. That computer is
running XP professional. I have installed the software on a second
machine that is running Vista Ultimate and it gives the following
error:

Error 6420: The 'discovery' process for the Advantage Database Server
fail. Unable to connect to the Advantage Database Server.
axServerConnect.

I know that the server is reachable over the network because I can
browse the files on it and even see the database files. I have
modified the shortcut with the clientserver part. I have tried to
install the software on other computers to see if it was a Vista issue
but the other XP machines in the office are having the same issue and
even my Windows 7 machine is giving me the error but I wasn't
expecting the 7 machine to work anyway.

If anyone has any ideas or help please let me know.

Thanks,
Joe

On the vista machine, did you give the address or location of the database and program using the network address for the xp server machine?  If not, that might give you that error.

did you install the clientserver software on the server? if so - is it
properly licensed?

Are you using the XP machine as the server? If so, you can use the
clientserver installation. If I am not mistaken, the clientserver
software needs to be loaded on a Windows Server machine. If you are
using windows XP and Vista machines, you can set it up as a peer to
peer and it will work fine as long as you only have a couple of
machines. After that, it starts getting slow. The clientserver
software helps retrieve data faster when you have multiple users.

Correction to above - I am not sure if you can install the
clientserver software on an XP machine. But to have a clientserver
install work, you must first install the clientserver software that
came with the AltaPoint installation disk.

That's correct you must first install Advantage (ADS) DB on the server which can be XP PRO or Windows Server 2000 and up,
once installed it will run in the background as a service. then just follow your installation instructions  for installing AP on the client machines.
