If you have not heard by now, there has been a rather dramatic change
of course regarding the AltaPoint Software. Many of you may have
purchased AltaPoint 6, with the expectation of eventually upgrading to
V7 at some point. Obviously things did not work out as planned with
V7, not the least of which was data conversion. It was certainly a
difficult year. Well, the V7 project is effectively being discarded
and V8 will take its place. With V8, AltaPoint will revert back to
the V6 platform and simply upgrade it with new features. Unlike V7 it
will not be Mac compatible. Anyone who purchased V7 or was eligible
to receive V7, will instead receive V8. I have already viewed the
beta and it worked just fine - no conversion issues at all. I will
keep this group informed as to the release date, at this point it
looks like sometime in December.

Does this mean the mac compatible software is discontinued for all the
Altapoint software or just the EMR? I am already using the Altapoint
medical V7 and I need to know if that software will continue to be
upgradable.

One of the primary objectives of V7 was not only to advance the
capabilities of V6, but also to blaze the trail into the Mac world. I
think the developers were intrigued by some of the possibilities that
Macs offered. AltaPoint V7 was unique in that a single CD could be
installed on a PC or a Mac, and that both PC's and Macs could co-exist
on the same network. As it turns out, although AltaPoint would have
been the only medical software available for the Mac, there just
weren't enough offices interested in Macs to make it worth the
investment of time and resources. It was a noble and innovative
pursuit on the development side, but in the end the accountants won.
AltaPoint V6 was based on the Advantage database, V7 used Posgres, V8
reverts back to Advantage. There will be no future development of
Posgres and hence no future for Mac users of AltaPoint. Again, the
only users affected by this decision are those who purchased V7 for
their Mac. Realistically if Mac users want to continue with
AltaPoint, they will need to buy a PC. For better or worse Windows
wins again.

So basically you are telling me that my purchase was useless and all
the work I paid for and put into the software with the assumption of
goodwill and future on the part of Altapoint is wasted and I need to
reinvest in software and computers. I am not happy. I need to look
at my options.

If you purchased Mac computers then that does put you in an awkward position.  I am not a Mac expert, but it is my understanding that there is a method for running Windows programs within the Mac environment.  Your V7 data is convertable to V8.  In fact I received notice yesterday that the V7 to V8 conversion will be released sometime in Feb'08.

I could have purchased a less expensive, fully functional program for
windows. The reason I chose Altapoint was for its Mac compatibility.
I don't like running in Windows and I am not familiar with the windows
operating system (and as much as people like to say windows is as
friendly as a mac it's not). I have spent thousands of dollars
getting this ready and I was about to start using Altapoint in my
office. I know I can't recover the funds I have lost in data entry,
however, I would like to be refunded the cost of the program. I will
look for another mac compatible program.

I beleive there is more to the decsion to abandon 7.0 than the
"accountants
winning" I personally raised the point directly with Doug Lyman at
the Las Vegas
event in 2005 (I beleive) that in over 13 years (at the time) of
meeting with physicians,
I had only been asked about a "Mac version" of a Practice Management
Software 1 time
so I never did understand the ROI on a "multi-platform" product.

Didn't mean to belittle the issue - hope it was not interpreted that
way. In your comment you mention ROI (Return on Investment) - the
analysis of ROI is an accounting function, hence what I was implying
in my earlier comment. I believe Doug put it in more general terms
during our last meeting, but the meaning is the same...there just
wasn't enough interest in the Mac world to justify the investment of
time and resources necessary to support 2 OS platforms. As a result,
a decision was made to put those resources toward the ongoing
improvement of a product for a much larger Windows population.
Perhaps a another point that I did not make is that those who
purchased V7 can still use it on a Mac and it continues to be
supported by AltaPoint.
