Altair DOS assembler aborts

Altair DOS and the EDIT editor seem to be working properly with commands working well. Saved file listings show the correct assembly language. The DOS assembler ASM however aborts on any file. ASM reports that there is no END statement, but the file listings clearly show the END statement present. No error number however from the assembler so it is not getting very far before aborting.

Are you supposed to Ctrl-z the input?  Maybe ctrl-d?

that one always gets me i forget to just hit enter a few times at the end of my source code.
