I just completed one of the "experimenters" kits and it was fairly straight forward.  I have experience with an earlier kit which had Geoff's VT100 board, but I can't seem to get it to work on the experimenter in the same way.

When I plug in a VGA monitor, I always get the ASCII Video Terminal Ver 1.3 herald just as I do with my older kit.  Powering it on with sw0 set to 1 while holding deposit UP should put it in VGA/USB keyboard mode with the VT100, but I don't have that.  All switches down and AUX1 down prints a directory but only to a virtual terminal rather than on the VT100.

I double checked all my solder work on the VT100 board and that looks fine, the LED comes up and version herald displays on the VGA monitor, but it seems I'm not using the VT100 emulator.  The SD card has not been modified.

Make sure it's reading from the SD card.  Connect to a laptop via USB and try to get a list of the disk images.

Also verify SW0 and DEPOSIT are working.

The SD card, SW0 and Deposit were fine.  Actually everything else was fine as well as running the example
programs and systems, just not being able to get a directory listing.  It turned out to be something simple and
silly.  I forgot to install the 6 pin header that mates the middle of the arduino to the front panel.  Once that was
installed I could SW 010000 and AUX2 down to see the disks on both the virtual terminal via USB 115200 and
also while testing the with SW0=1 and holding DEPOSIT up on power on and then a 010000 and AUX2 on the
VGA display.
