ELECTION OF REGULAR MEMBERS
ALTA has received more nominations (5) than available places (3) for the position of regular member of its executive committee. As such, a voting phase begins herewith.
Every member of ALTA is allowed to express their vote for up to three nominees by writing an email to pres...@alta.asn.au with their nominees of choice. The nominees with the most votes will be elected to the position.
Below are the nominees (in alphabetical order by surname) and their positions statements:
Xiang Dai
I previously served as a student member of the ALTA Executive Committee from 2019 to 2020, and I am now running to serve as a regular member for the 2025-2026 term.
My vision is to facilitate collaboration among NLP groups across Australia, enhance mentorship programs for PhD students and PostDocs, and help early-career researchers gain easier access to resources and opportunities to share their work.
I aim to ensure that ALTA remains inclusive and transparent, while providing support to researchers in a simple and efficient way.
Gabriela Ferraro
I am eager to participate in this committee to contribute my skills and enthusiasm toward maintaining and advancing ALTA’s recognition and reputation. I am committed to working collaboratively with fellow members to develop effective paths to shape ALTA’s contribution to our community. I believe my leadership will complement the committee's efforts and help ensure that all perspectives are considered in decision-making.
Simon Gonzalez
I am a socio-phonetician with over 15 years of experience. During my career, I have developed tools for analysis and visualization of speech phenomena, and how linguistic behaviour is used to build social identity in different parts of the world. My research is underpinned by solid empirical methods through areas such as computational linguistics and speech processing. This has given me the invaluable opportunity to delve deep on trying to understand the strengths and weaknesses of Automatic Speech Recognition systems in terms of their linguistic performance and their usability across a range of typologically-differentiated languages.
Aditya Joshi
I am a Lecturer at UNSW Sydney where I teach and research NLP, a field that has been my passion since my first paper at EMNLP 2011 and PhD from Monash University & IIT Bombay in 2018. To further ALTA's statement of purpose, I would like to: (A)Organise satellite events such as academia-industry meetups and NLP summer schools; (B)Promote ALTA membership to NLP practitioners. To achieve these, I will leverage my past experience in research (CSIRO Data61), industry (SEEK), and startup (Notiv), and as the organizing chair of ‘Rainbow AI Australia’ (UNSW+Google collaboration), a workshop for LGBTI+ researchers in AI.
Bahadorreza Ofoghi
With over two decades of experience in NLP and as Program Director of the Bachelor of AI in my school, I have seen the transformative impact of Generative AI on our field. These advancements are reshaping NLP research and applications, presenting exciting opportunities for innovation and collaboration. As a long-time ALTA member, I am committed to advocating for broader outreach and supporting students and emerging researchers, ensuring ALTA remains at the forefront of these developments. If elected, I aim to strengthen initiatives, expand visibility, and foster inclusive collaboration to benefit both our community and future leaders in the field.
The closing date for voting will be 5pm AEST Friday 29th of December, 2024.
The results of the election will be announced on this mailing list.
