Still no official permission on closing second critter crossing, there
will be another meeting to discuss it. That's where it stands for now,
but you know how those committee procedures go.

I would like to check it out this year if it comes to my attention.

I read that info this morning. If you read it, you may have a different
interpretation. I check every day so I'll try to keep up with the situation.

It should be coming soon, March is just around the corner.

Yes, it is. This year is moving right along ... too quickly. I don't
remember the migration time frame from last year, but I might be able to
find a reference.

Betty used his or her keyboard to write :
IIRC mid to late March, but it would be better to not trust my memory.

I found several articles going back as far as 2008, I stopped there. The
migration lasts from March into April. There's another road closure
meeting in the works so it remains to be seen what will happen. I also
found a cute crossing sign with a salamander on it.

Betty formulated the question :
I hope they put one up and close the road. I know the neighbors
probably will think it is a hassle, but I often choose to go the other
way around to go anywhere anyhow. One big hazard triangle for the
Spotted and one for the Jefferson's would be nice = mustn't play
favorites.

The one article I read said the volunteers pick up the animals and put
them in buckets to transport them across the road. I had the idea that
they carried them in their hands. One particular woman was the driving
force behind the program in 2008, I don't know if she is still involved.

Apparently the volunteers are counting them into buckets and
transporting them across the road. I guess the idea is to pick them up
from the roadside before they cross and keep a count.

I read a couple of articles about the upper salamander crossing being
closed has some opposition.

Yes, the opposition was from the chief of police. I haven't read any
results of another committee meeting, just that one is planned. It seems
like a minor inconvenience to close the road for two nights, but I don't
know what that entails. I think the community effort to save the
critters is an admirable goal. You're probably right about the counting
method, I didn't think of that.

Until I read a second article I had thought that they were just
transporting them to safety. It turns out that the volunteers have
training material and gear and the whole shebang. Not just the
salamanders either, frogs too.

I did wonder how they handle the frogs. Seems as though they would be
more difficult, as *they* jump.

This is a leap year.

Haha, yes. Perfect for frogs.

I don't see any news about the crossing today, but I did take note that
DST begins the 8th of March. It's a good thing the critters don't know
that! Could mess with *their* schedule.

Betty explained on 2/27/2020 :
It was rather warm yesterday, but not very warm. Last night at around 2
AM the wind picked up jostled the house a little bit, then it rained
and got windy again (I watched the trees bending and the birds
clinging) and then it was both foggy *and* windy at the same time. Then
the sun came out and shined for a few minutes and then it started
snowing.

I suspect their schedule will be off this year.
