Zen influence on "modern art".

Thoughts?

Many artists in the fifties were influences by DT Suzuki's lectures and
books, yet few of them ever became actively involved in meditation,
retreats, zen centers, etc. Except for only a few, most of these
artists emulated and appropriated aesthetic qualities only, or even
procedural qualities. They even parroted the statements of zen masters
from koans.

It insults me. Perhaps because it forces me to question my own
motives, my own influence from zen in my artwork. Perhaps my fear of
seeming a poser or imperialistic collector of "exotic" arts is pushing
me to find a deeper connection between my art and buddhism.

For all the energy, time and resources that have gone into learning to
draw, paint, sculpt, etc, as well as the actual building of a piece of
art, I wonder how I can better help the world, without taking on the
missionary mindset. Zen masters give of themselves constantly, always
looking for turning words... how can I do this with art?

Check out John Cage's art and music.
"zen" is only a word and a thing.
or to state it as a Taoist might think it
it's a banner flapping in the wind.

it's not zen that's important, not at all
it's the wind.

Seems to me Cage's 4' 33" was perfect... but his excitement to bring
ordinary sounds into his nearly random compositions misses the mark.
Pierre Henri's "Door and a Sigh" is much more respectful of sound.

... and I wouldn't try to bottle the wind up and sell it as art.

Instead I'll become a tree and sway my branches in the wind.
