Yes, there is a difference. If your website is opening with www or non www both then from the point of view of the Search engines take it is duplicate content like same things at 2 locations. you may choose any of the version www or either non www but select one and put seo efforts on one version. Thats why it is important you use the 301 redirect.

Incorrect. Search engines understand a single site may be accessed as
both example.com and www.example.com, and do not consider it to be
duplicate content. It is not the same as having two different domain names.

Someone who understands SEO would know that.
